About this Item: The Limited Editions Club [printed by The Westerham Press Ltd], Westerham, 1964. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: very good. Hutton, Clarke (illustrator). Limited Edition. Number 351 of 1500, quarto size, 223 pp., signed by Clarke Hutton, with LEC Monthly Letter and Announcement. One of America's most esteemed writers, Mark Twain (1835-1910), whose real name was Samuel Langhorne Clemens, created classic characters and stories that have endured for generations; his writing is characterised by his wit and humour, evident in both his fiction and nonfiction. "The Prince and the Pauper" is one of Twain's most popular novels and has been adapted into numerous forms, including film and television, theatre, and comics; it tells of two boys of identical appearance who switch identities in order to experience life from the other's perspective. This Limited Editions Club publication includes paintings by English painter and printmaker Clarke Hutton (1898-1984), whose illustrations have a vivid and dark energy as the characters swirl through their own stark psychological space. Laid in are both the LEC Monthly Newsletter, a well as the single-page announcement. ___DESCRIPTION: Quarter royal-blue velvet with grey buckram boards, gilt ruled borders along the velvet edge on both boards, gold paper spine label with black lettering and ruled border, frontispiece a full-colour painting by Clarke Hutton, title page with red ruled border above and beneath the title, tipped-in facsimile letter from handwriting by Heather Child, twelve (including frontispiece) full-colour paintings by Hutton throughout, red line drawings by Hutton throughout; monotype Van Dijck, antique Wookey Wove paper, quarto size (10.75" by 7.75"), pagination: [1-4] 5-221 [222] [1 colophon], one of 1500 copies, this number 351, signed by Clarke Hutton. With announcement, one sheet measuring 8.25" by 5.25", and the LEC Monthly Newsletter, one sheet folded once to four pages measuring 11.75" by 8.75", then folded in half for mailing. In original glassine wrapper, inside a slipcase covered with cream paper, with a royal-blue paper spine label with cream lettering and ruled border. ___CONDITION: A fine copy; the covers clean, the corners straight and unrubbed, the binding tight with solid hinges, the interior clean and bright, and free of prior owner markings; the text block is very gently bumped at the bottom right corner, and the vertical gilt border on the rear panel is slightly crooked due to an issue at the binding stage, else fine. The announcement and Monthly Newsletter are fine, clean and without wear, with just a hint of age-toning. The glassine wrapper is very good, clean, with overall edge wear and chipping to the top edge and some small creases along the edges. The slipcase is near fine, strong and sturdy, clean overall with some minor soiling, some sunning to the spine, and the tail of the spine gently bumped. ___CITATION: LEC no. 361. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell.
