Two-toned binding with title circle on front board. Board corners are frayed and soft. Rubbed and frayed board edges. Vellum spine is frayed at edges with water mark to lower spine. Some soil. Cracked hinges, but binding is still nice and tight. Endpapers are foxed and have water stain on lower edge. Text is clean. Beautiful plates. Top edge gilt. Foredge soil. Nice tight binding.

Condition: Very Good. Half vellum over decorative boards and a circle with the title to the top right corner and gilt text to spine. Top edge gilt. Both full color chromolithographs and black and white illustrations throughout; 40 plates, most of which have tissue guards. Envelope with two letters, one hand-written from cartoonist Lank Leonard and the other an anonymously typed letter. No previous owners' names or other markings. Wear to boards, primarily at edges with small loss to exterior paper at the corners (see image); foxing to pastedowns and adjacent endpapers. 10.25 x 12.75 inches. Top edge gilt. Original quarter leather with pebble-patterned paper-covered boards, spine titled in gilt, front board titled in red on gilt-bordered leather roundel. Head and foot of spine and front hinge a little rubbed, rear hinge slightly so. Front board and roundel with a few minor scratchmarks, roundel also slightly grazed. Lower outer corners of boards rubbed and a little bumped & curled, upper outer corners slightly so. Paper loss at edges around lower outer corners, slight loss at edges around tips of upper outer corners, and very slight loss at one or two spots along edges elsewheres. Lower edge of rear board slightly bruised along some 10cm from spine. No dust jacket. Pages 134 & 135 of index spotted; margins of page IX and corresponding areas of blank page VIII opposite, upper margins of leaf facing Plate XX, and pages 133, 136 & 137 of index lightly & sparsely spotted. Occasional faint & sparse spotting elsewheres. Leaf facing Plate XL with minor production flaw, being untrimmed along 1.5cm of upper edge at outer corner, the remnant folded into upper margin of recto, the fold not quite flush with text-block - the appearance of which unaffected. Tips of a number of lower outer corners a little curled and/or lightly creased. A few tissue-guards creased. Fore- & lower edges of text-block lightly & sparsely spotted; untrimmed lower edge also toned, and fore-edge slightly so. Binding holding firmly and of pleasing appearance, contents generally clean and tight. VERY GOOD copy. (Heavy item, overseas shipping at cost.).
