About this Item: 1942. First Edition. Philadelphia: Dorrance and Company, 1943 [1943]. 8vo, 562 p., black boards with spine and front panel stamped in gilt. First edition of the author's first book, a novel based on the life of Edgar Allan Poe. Though Williams' would go on to publish at least one additional novel ('Have you Been to the River?', Exposition Press, 1952) he is today best remembered for his work as a black historian and sociologist, who advanced the study of black history in his pioneering studies The Rebirth of African Civilization and The Destruction of Black Civilization. Light wrinkling to cloth on lower front and rear boards, with a small section of wrinkling to middle rear board, light mottling to page ends, but a fairly sharp and clean copy overall. In a VG jacket, with light edgewear and chipping, loss to upper spine and area along rear panel adjacent, and with thin archival tape repair along verso of rear spine joint, but an attractive example of the scarce jacket, with price of $3.50 intact. This copy has been inscribed by Williams on the fep: "With Best Wishes, Chancellor Williams, Dec 22, 1954". A very presentable copy of a scarce work of African American fiction. Signed by Author.
