About this Item: Done Into Print & Decorated by Robert H. Perdue at Cleveland, Ohio, MCM & II. "This edition is limited to ninety three signed copies of which this is number 19 [signed]: Robert H. Perdue"., 1902. Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. This edition is limited to ninety-three signed copies of which this is number 19 [signed]: Robert H. Perdue". 7 7/8 inches x 10 ½ in., signed and numbered limitation page with onionskin/tissue paper overlay, printed in red-brown; design title-page with the overlay; two page introduction by Joseph Leon Gobeille; six design border illustrations printed in black with the red-brown printed border illustrations on onionskin paper overlays loosely inserted; with printed text of The Raven; copyright page. 27 pp. Printed on thin, japan vellum type paper, with the overlays printed on a very thin tissue type paper; sewn into cream-colored paper card covers, with plain, thin japan vellum type paper wrappers over the covers. Outer covers show some age-related tanning, chipping to the paper wrapper of the spine; the overlays to the limitation page and title-page show some slight edge wear with dusting, very light creases. Each overlay is meant to lay flat, facing the black illustration. Very scarce illustrated item, done in the Art Nouveau style, with some Aubrey Beardsley-like details; and produced in Cleveland Ohio. A few words from the introduction, written by a book collector and early member of the Rowfant Club, Joseph Leon Gobeille: Mr. Robert Hartley Perdue, while claiming no extraordinary knowledge of POESY, is an ardent admirer of these children of mystery [Poe's poems]. In his leisure hours he has made a pen-and-ink folio of the Raven , using Quarles's original lines as a foundation for his labours. Later he made four replicas for bibliophile friends. Mr. Perdue drew his borders as Fancy and Imagination dictated, and incidentally answered some questions which were not truly met by Dore, or any other of our poet's distinguished illustrators. I mention one. How could the shadow of the raven fall upon the floor as pictured by the artists? The lamp is on the table, the bird on the bust of Pallas high above the point of light. Mr. Perdue solves the problem--for his light is in the hall beyond, shining obliquely down through the transom and naturally throws the shadow on the floor where Poe saw it. [-] At the solicitation of the writer, who has in his library No. 1 of the original folios, Mr. Perdue consented to the reproduction of his drawings in a different size. With him it has been a labour of pleasure and study; without emolument or honorarium, and every bibliophile and lover of Poe will give him cheer and compliment for his consent to publish his embellishments for the best loved and most characteristic of Poe's poems. About this Item: Handwritten & bound miniature illustrated manuscript book; undated; ca. 1980's. Artist's name written on front paste down., 1980. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. Handwritten & bound miniature illustrated manuscript book; undated; ca. 1980's. Artist's name written on front paste down. A hand-crafted miniature artist's book by Jiri Hadlac. Size of binding: 2 x 2 1/2"; consists of 18 numbered pages of calligraphic manuscript, written in English, in several different colored inks & with similar drawings in outline of heads of ravens, by Hadlac. Paper is a special, multi-tinted paper, assembled accordion-style, with written words in various directions & drawings on one side. Text is sentences from Poe's "The Raven", beginning" "Once upon a midnight." Binding is in a dark- stained calf leather with a semi-abstract, raised/sculpted form on front cover, which suggests a pen, head on a raven, etc. with various tools blind-stamped in lines on both covers, letter P on back cover; text is bound to back cover, so the front cover drops down & away from text-block; cover edges, surface show "antiqued" look. Artist's name signed as calligraphy on front paste down: Hadlac. Fine condition. One of a small series of handwritten & entirely handmade/bound books based on Poe's Raven. This appears to be the smallest in size, to our knowledge. Rare item. "[.] The decisive breakthrough came with the Fifth Jubilee Trienale held in Prague, and organized by the Prague Museum of National Literature. The selection offered a rich and varied cross-section of new styles and unconventional approaches, including books written, illustrated, and bound by one artist, book-concepts, book-objects, books bound in morocco and decorated in classical style, books employing conventional techniques and materials, books of handmade paper or synthetic materials. Particularly outstanding binders included J. H. Kocman and Jiri Hadlac. Kocman, though by profession a veterinary pharmacologist, is the creator of numerous livre d'auteur projects and concept-books embodying his conception of the total book; i.e., a book created in all respects (idea, material, actual execution) by a single artist. Jiri Hadlac, graphic artist and sculptor, had a different background, natural science having been his original field of specialization. Hadlac is an idiosyncratic interpreter of famous literary texts. A good example of his work is his calligraphic rendering of Poe's poem "The Raven" accompanied by his own illustrations, graphic layout, and design and finished with Hadlac's own handmade colored paper and binding." (The Contemporary Renaissance of Fine Bookbinding in Czechoslovakia, 1973-1985, by Emil Minar; in: Fine Print, Vol. 13, #1, January 1987; p. 24). Also see Jiri Hadlac's own article: "Artist of the Book", in: The New Bookbinder Journal of Designer Bookbinders Vol. 8, 1988; pp. 28-36; several pictures of other book-projects, featuring Poe's "Raven" are shown.
