About this Item: Wordsworth Editions Ltd, 2015. TRADE PAPERBACK. Condition: New. Wordsworth Editions Ltd. New. Wordsworth Press, Paperback, 2015 Book Condition: New, Translated by C. K. Scott Moncrieff (revised by Moya Longstaffe). With an Introduction and Notes by Moya Longstaffe. The Red and the Black has been hailed as the first great 'realist' novel of the nineteenth century, offering a lively and detailed picture of social and political life in the provinces and in Paris towards the end of the 1820s, the close of the stifling reactionary period of the Bourbon Restoration. Stendhal himself claimed that no-one before him had ventured to portray with such verisimilitude the 'moral and morose' France of 1830. However 'moral and morose' his novel is definitely not. Ironic, fast-moving, entertaining and incisive in its social criticism, it is a novel of ambition and passion, of indignation and tenderness, of polemic and poetry, which speaks to us today, as clearly as it did to the author's contemporaries, of the heights, depths and idiocies of which our human nature is capable or culpable. . 2015. His story of Julien Sorel is incomparably the most astute and penetrating study of middle~class mores in all fiction. It is, in addition, a relentless dissection of hypocrisy and opportunism. STENDHAL (Henri Beyle) was born in 1783 in Grenoble, France. At the age of seventeen he became a dragoon in Napoleon's army in Italy. After a few years of civilian life in Paris, where he began what was to be his lifelong pursuit of the opposite sex, Stendhal returned to Napoleon's army in the commissariat branch. When his army service was over he went to live in Italy, where he began writing. His early works included On Love, Racine and Shakespeare and The Red and the Black. He was appointed French consul to Trieste under the July Monarchy of Louis Philippe. Among his later writings are The Charterhouse of Parma, Lucien leuwen, and The Life of Henri Brulard. Stendhal died in 1842. Seller Inventory # 5052002
