About this Item: Createspace Independent Publishing Platform, United States, 2017. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English. Brand new Book. The Purple Pileus, The Red Room, and Under the Knife is a collection of short stories by the famous author H. G. Wells. Herbert George Wells (21 September 1866 - 13 August 1946), usually referred to as H. G. Wells, was an English writer. He was prolific in many genres, including the novel, history, politics, social commentary, and textbooks and rules for war games. Wells is now best remembered for his science fiction novels and is called a "father of science fiction", along with Jules Verne and Hugo Gernsback. His most notable science fiction works include The Time Machine (1895), The Island of Doctor Moreau (1896), The Invisible Man (1897), and The War of the Worlds (1898). He was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature four times. Wells's earliest specialized training was in biology, and his thinking on ethical matters took place in a specifically and fundamentally Darwinian context. He was also from an early date an outspoken socialist, often (but not always, as at the beginning of the First World War) sympathizing with pacifist views. His later works became increasingly political and didactic, and he wrote little science fiction, while he sometimes indicated on official documents that his profession was that of journalist. Novels like Kipps and The History of Mr Polly, which describe lower-middle-class life, led to the suggestion that he was a worthy successor to Charles Dickens, but Wells described a range of social strata and even attempted, in Tono-Bungay (1909), a diagnosis of English society as a whole. A diabetic, in 1934, Wells co-founded the charity The Diabetic Association (known today as Diabetes UK). Odin's Library Classics is dedicated to bringing the world the best of humankind's literature from throughout the ages. Carefully selected, each work is unabridged from classic works of fiction, nonfiction, poetry, or drama. Seller Inventory # APC9781977683991

About this Item: Createspace Independent Publishing Platform, United States, 2014. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English. Brand new Book. "It's your own choosing," said the man with the withered arm once more. I heard the faint sound of a stick and a shambling step on the flags in the passage outside. The door creaked on its hinges as a second old man entered, more bent, more wrinkled, more aged even than the first. He supported himself by the help of a crutch, his eyes were covered by a shade, and his lower lip, half averted, hung pale and pink from his decaying yellow teeth. He made straight for an armchair on the opposite side of the table, sat down clumsily, and began to cough. Seller Inventory # APC9781499306224

About this Item: Createspace Independent Publishing Platform, United States, 2017. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English. Brand new Book. "The Red Room" is a short story written by H. G. Wells. First published in the 1896 edition of "The Idler" magazine, it is a quintessentially Gothic tale about a man who spends a night in a supposedly haunted room in Lorraine Castle in an attempt to disprove the legends surrounding it. This thrilling tale constitutes a must-read for fans of Gothic literature and Wells' seminal work, and it would make for a fantastic addition to any collection. Herbert George Wells (1866 - 1946) was a prolific English writer who wrote in a variety of genres, including the novel, politics, history, and social commentary. "The Father of Science Fiction" was also a staunch socialist, and his later works are increasingly political and didactic. Today, he is perhaps best remembered for his contributions to the science fiction genre thanks to such novels as "The Time Machine" (1895), "The Invisible Man" (1897), and "The War of the Worlds" (1898). Many vintage books such as this are becoming increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this book now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with a specially commissioned new biography of the author. Seller Inventory # APC9781546661047

About this Item: Independently Published, United States, 2020. Paperback. Condition: New. Language: English. Brand new Book. An unnamed protagonist chooses to spend the night in the remote Lorraine Castle, in a room that is said to be haunted; in an effort to disprove the various legends surrounding it. Despite ominous warnings from the three infirm custodians who reside there, he ascends to the "Red Room" to begin his night's vigil. While in the room, he is gripped by an inexplicable feeling of dread. As he tries to combat his fear, a series of events (that mostly include several candles going out unexplainedly) drive him into an outright panic, he feared he might not make it through the night. He begins to thrash at perceived phantoms until he hits his head and falls unconscious.Herbert George Wells, better known as H. G. Wells, was an English writer best known for such science fiction novels as The Time Machine, The War of the Worlds and The Invisible Man. He was a prolific writer of both fiction and non-fiction, and produced works in many different genres, including contemporary novels, history, and social commentary. Wells was an outspoken socialist and a pacifist, and his later works became increasingly political and didactic. His middle period novels (1900-1920) were more realistic; they covered lower middle class life and the 'New Woman' and the Suffragettes. Along with Jules Verne, Well is often referred to as "The Father of Science Fiction". Seller Inventory # APC9781677089956
