In this fifth volume of their acclaimed series "The Story of Civilization," the Durants illuminate the cultural, intellectual, and artistic revival that swept across Europe from the 14th to the 17th centuries. The book begins by setting the stage, providing readers with an understanding of the context from which the Renaissance emerged. It explores the decline of the medieval world, the impact of the Black Death, and the shifting political and economic landscapes that paved the way for a new era. As the Renaissance unfolds, the Durants guide readers through the flourishing of humanism, the revival of interest in classical learning, and the emergence of great thinkers and artists. From the scientific discoveries of Copernicus and Galileo to the artistic achievements of Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, and Raphael, the authors paint a vivid picture of a time when creativity, curiosity, and innovation were celebrated. "The Renaissance" also delves into the political and social changes that accompanied this period of rebirth. The rise of powerful city-states such as Florence, the influence of the Medici family, and the shifting dynamics of power in Europe all come into focus. Moreover, the Durants explore the impact of the Renaissance beyond the borders of Europe, tracing its influence on global exploration, trade, and cultural exchange. Through their engaging narrative style and meticulous research, Will Durant and Ariel Durant bring to life the people, events, and ideas that shaped this pivotal period in history. "The Renaissance" stands as a testament to human creativity, resilience, and the enduring quest for knowledge and beauty. For readers interested in delving into the complexities and wonders of the Renaissance, this book serves as an essential and captivating guide. It is a rich tapestry of history, art, philosophy, and culture, offering a deep and insightful exploration of a transformative era in human civilization.

It was written over a lifetime, and it totals two million words across nearly 10,000 pages. The series is incomplete: in the first book of the series (Our Oriental Heritage, which covers the history of the East through 1933), Mr. Durant stated that he wanted to include the history of the West through the early 20th century. However, the series ends with The Age of Napoleon since the Durants died before any additional volumes could be completed. In later volumes, beginning with The Age of Reason Begins, Ariel is credited as a co-author.
