About this Item: The Book Club of California, San Francisco, 1990. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. First edition. Fine copy of this excellent leaf book. Printed letterpress in Bembo on Lana, a French mouldmade paper, bound in 1/4 goatskin with Fabriano paper boards. Really a lovely production. The leaf in this copy is important -- it is from the preliminary "to the reader" prologue, in which the publisher bemoans the publication of bible in English and explains the present book as essentially a necessary evil. The author explains that, back in the good old days of St. Jerome's Vulgate, "the scholar taught not his master, the sheep controlled not the pastor," and so on. A significant leaf regarding the history of the translation of the Catholic bible into English. Hamel and Silver, Disbound and Dispersed 192. Seller Inventory # 4054

LEAF BOOK] The Rhemes New Testament; Being: Turner, Decherd

About this Item: The Book Club of California, printed by W. Thomas Taylor, San Francisco, 1990. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Limited First Edition. One of 395 copies, quarto size, 44 pp., with prospectus. Publication 193 from The Book Club of California; the leaves for this book had been at the Club for several years, as David Magee had planned this leaf book. They were "rediscovered" and the book was finally published. "The Rhemes New Testament", also known as the Douai Bible, was an important and influential Biblical text of the sixteenth-century, a period known for numerous new translations of scriptural texts, as it was the first Roman Catholic New Testament in English. This lively history of its conception, publication and reception is supplemented with an exceptionally choice leaf from an incomplete copy of the original edition of 1582: pp. 719-720, from "The Apocalypse, Cha. XI-XII: "And a great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sunne, and the moon under her feete, & on her head a crowne of twelve starres:" With the famously grotesque woodcut initial 'A' used as inspiration by Eric Gill in his "Four Gospels", loosely laid in are three xerox copies of pages pertaining to Gill's thoughts on the "very erect satyr". ___DESCRIPTION: Quarter red morocco and gray Fabriano paper boards, two illustrations, one original leaf; Romulus Open type, French mouldmade "Lana" paper, quarto size (10.25" by 7.25"), pagination: [i-vi] 1-37 [1 original leaf] [1 colophon], limited first edition, one of 395 copies, with original prospectus slipped in. ___CONDITION: A fine copy, the covers clean and unrubbed, the binding tight with solid hinges, the interior clean and bright, and free of prior owner markings; clean, crisp, as new. Prospectus also fine, without any wear, clean and bright. ___CITATION: BCC no. 193. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard shipping charge does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Please contact us with any questions you may have, we are here to help. Seller Inventory # CNBR045
