About this Item: Royal 4to, pp.vii[1],34 [+ inserted plates & extra plates] Published by Editions Alecto, London, [1976]., 1976. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. Number 8 of 110 (135) copies signed by the artist but without four loose aquatints in a pocket at the rear. Handset in 20-pt. Palatino Italic, with side-notes in 9-pt. Century Schoolbook bold, and printed on Barcham Green Crisbrook hand-made paper. Title-page lettering by Sebastian Carter. Quarter blue canvas with morocco label gilt, special patterned sides in blue and grey, grey handmade endpapers, blue canvas slipcase. A fine copy, tissue-guarded. Printed at the Rampant Lions Press, Cambridge. Although Patrick Procktor (1936-2003) did most work as an independent printmaker, his sequence of `Ancient Mariner' aquatints are amongst his most memorable compositions. They are loosely based on Dore's famous engravings but possess elements of camp fantasy very different from the former's gothick imaginings. The series begins with a portrait of Coleridge and ends with a self-portrait and displays throughout a preference for non-realistic colour and flatness of surface in an edgy formulation. The text was printed in grey so as not to swamp the delicate lines of the engravings. (RLP 67). Signed by Author(s). Seller Inventory # 1994

About this Item: George G. Harrap & Co. Ltd., London, 1910. Hardcover. Condition: Good. Pogany, Willy (illustrator). First Edition. Rare signed limited edition. Large 7 1/2" x 10" design. From limitation page: "This Edition is Limited to 525 copies for sale in England and America of which number this copy is 226, Willy Pogany". Dark brown full morocco leather boards, gilt cover design and spine titles, moderate shelf wear. Cover depicts large golden sailing vessel w/ornate gilt titles: "The Ancient Mariner". Spine richly displays flourishing titles in gilt w/decorative albatross and stern of ship. Deckled pages very good. Bind good; hinges intact. A rare near very good example of this beautiful volume. Elaborate, profuse, symbolical and complexly illustrated edition by Willy Pogany. Twenty deliciously, subtly, subdued plates in blending watercolor. Enchanting monochromatic designs throughout w/flourishing borders, accents, colors; some chiaroscuro among other varied methods. Although other artists have illustrated various editions, Willy Pogany captures the surreal menace of this tale. A rare and beautiful book. "It is an ancient Mariner, and he stoppeth one of thee." Coleridge's masterpiece about a sailor who offends nature by killing a seabird takes the listener on a macabre odyssey that includes brushes with monsters, a ship manned by zombies, and a game of dice with Death. The work of an imagination some say was distorted by opium and alcohol, the poem has retained its power and beauty for over two centuries. Printed in Great Britain. Apprx. 120 pages. Insured post. Size: 4to - over 9¾" - 12" tall. Signed by Artist. Book. Seller Inventory # 020364

About this Item: The Stukeley Press, 1994. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Published in a limited edition of 50 signed and numbered copies, and contains 30 signed, numbered and captioned (in pencil) aquatints by Alan Andrew Farrant. Nos. 1-39 are loose within a tied linen-covered Solander box (468 x 330 x 55m), titled in black on the cover and on the spine. Nos. 40-50 were book bound. This is number 8. The aquatints are all in Fine condition. The Solander box is in near fine condition with just a little light marking and slight fading of the spine titling in a few places. The linen ties are all present. This boxed issue is in 13 gatherings of 2 sheets folded to 4 leaves (457 x 320m), with interspersed sheets (455 x 315mm) of plates (211 x 152mm) and guard sheets (365 x 246mm). Type filmset in Caxton Book. The Text is printed at Senefelder Press on Velin Arch Blanc 200gms. The aquatints were made in the workshop of Hugh Stonemen and printed on Velin Arch Blanc 270gms. The production was extensively reviewed by Walter Crawford in 'The Coleridge Bulletin New Series No 11, Spring 1998, pp 72-76' : 'Farrant wishes his 30 aquatints to 'illuminate' (rather than 'merely illustrate') the poem 'as a cautionary tale to all who are blessed at birth with the poet's or artist's gift of perception,' which is 'the very essence of the soul' and opens the soul to the inspiration of the Muse, 'But the soul is a delicate flower; easily crushed and corrupted by the delights of worldly pursuits' [Pr]. The aquatints were exhibited in February 1997 in the Brewhouse Gallery at Eton, where Farrant, 'an old Etonian', also met with students to discuss his works and the Coleridge's poem. A wonderful striking production which rarely appears on the market. Collectible. More images available on request. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact. Signed by Illustrator(s).
