About this Item: Harper and Brothers. New York, 1882. Hardcover. Condition: Good. Huge hardcover. 15 x 18.5 inches. Brown cloth with gold lettering and decorations. Cloth is faded and speckled. Damage to the crown of the spine. Corners bumped. Page edges gilt. 12 numbered pages + 38 full page plates. Of the 12 numbered pages, one is the title page and one is a full page plate -- so there are in fact only 7 pages with the text of the poem; the rest are illustrated pages. Plates are on heavy paper, printed on one side only. There are some stains in the margins and some fading to the pages, but the plates themselves are quite free from damage, except one where there is a ghost of the tissue cover. The binding is broken after page 12, but only one plate is detached; the others are still bound in. It could be repaired quite easily. First published in the US in 1877, this 1882 edition is harder to come by. Please email with questions or to request photos. Some extra shipping charges will be required to pack and send safely. About this Item: New York Harper and Brothers 1888, 1888. Early printing. With three vignettes and 39 black and white plates by Gustave Doré. Large folio (470 x 370 mm), publisher's original dark-green cloth, the spine with a gilt lettering panel and gilt decoration the upper cover with artistically designed gilt lettering and a large pictorially rendered decoration featuring an albatross flying, a.e.g.` 12, [38 plates] pp. A very nice copy of a book rarely found in truly "fine" condition. The hinges are firm and intact which, due to the size of the textblock is rarely the case. The green cloth and gilt are bright and without fading or rubbing, there is a light bit of age or shelving evidence along the edges and a little more at the spine tips, a very light, small, unobtrusive old damp stain affects the top inner edge of the blank portion of some of the first leaves and a some at the rear of the volume, The evidence of old damp at the upper corner becomes somewhat larger for the final few leaves. a beautifully PRODUCED book, it remains one of Dore s most elusive titles and one of his most critically acclaimed works. Coleridge s RIME OF THE ANCIENT MARINER was a signal shift to modern poetry and the beginning of British Romantic literature. Its dark and brooding themes, most likely inspired by James Cook's second voyage of exploration, provided the perfect vehicle for Gustave Doré to employ his signature use of darkness and light to produce what is surely one of the most amazing illustrated books of the period. The gallery of pictures has a 'wonderful power.and artistic imagination.' It was Doré who was able to 'interpret its scenes to the imagination and the heart.and then have the work presented in a grand folio, the poem beautifully printed and illustrated with forty spirited drawings that seem to be all alive, each upon a broad sheet and printed in the very best style of the art.' "The proper discussion of this splendid volume belongs in another department; we may, however, say of it here that probably never in the history of book-making has a fine specimen of its kind been produced." Nat'l Re[psitory. Seller Inventory # 30183
