About this Item: Simon and Schuster, New York, 1951. Hardcover. Condition: Fair. First Edition. Fair to Good ex-library stated first prtg; re-bound 1/4 cloth over soiled & worn mauve boards, exterior & endpapers a bit weathered. Charming pen & ink on f cover & throughout + full color paintings every chapter. Lays flat for music stand, but still solid binding. Usually mails within 12 hours. ; 9.5 x 12 in.; 244 pages; Collection of songs from one of America's greatest song writers. A distinguished and beautiful selection of forty seven of the most memorable Rodgers and Hart songs. Text is liberally seasoned with nostalgia and anecdote which tells the intimate behind the scenes stories of writing and producing the famous shows for which the songs were written. Illustrations include five pages of colorful paintings, and eighty two black and white drawings by Doris Lee. Special voice & piano arrangements by Dr. Albert Sirmay, and lots more, including information on where and when the shows were performed. Songs range from 1925 to 1942. Great foreward by Oscar Hammerstein."I met Larry (Hart) first. We were both actors in a Columbia Varsity show. He had written a burlesque of the silent movies which had been very loosely interpolated into the story of the play. I don't remember much about this except that Larry played Mary Pickford. This would, of course, be unforgettable. The blonde curly wig didn't go very well with his thick black eyebrows, but it was not meant to. " After the Saturday matinee of this same Varsity show, a fraternity brother, Morty Rodgers came up to me. He had in tow a boy about 12 years old. His name was Richard. The rest is history. " Introduction by Richard Rodgers."In regard to Larry Hart's words I am perhaps the greatest living expert. Larry and I worked together for over 24 years, from the time I was 16 and he was 23 until his death in 1943 when I was forty and he was 47. This was probably the oldest partnership in the history of the theater. I have no fear that my devotion to these lyrics is solely emotional. In a larger sense there is something I should like this book to be, I think Mr. Hart deserves a memorial. Larry had only one pride that I was able to discover, that was his work. He didn't care about the way he looked or where he lived. He wasn't concerned about the social or financial staus of his friends or what row he sat in at the opening. He did care tremendously, however, about the turn of a phrase and the mathematical exactness of an interior rhyme. "#Includes songs from GARRICK GAIETIES, DEAREST ENEMY, THE GIRLFRIEND, PEGGY-ANN, A CONNECTICUT YANKEE, FROM SPRING IS HERE, PRESENT ARMS, HEADS UP, SIMPLE SIMON, EVERGREEN, AMERICA'S SWEETHEART, LOVE ME TONIGHT, BLUE MOON, JUMBO, ON YOUR TOES, BABES IN ARMS, I MARRIED AN ANGEL, PAL JOEY and many others.#WHAT A GREAT PIECE OF ENTERTAINMENT MEMORABILIA. About this Item: Simon and Schuster, New York, 1951. Hardcover. Condition: Good. Doris Lee (illustrator). 1st Edition. Stated First Edition. 'The Words and the Music of Forty-Seven of Their Songs from Twenty-two Shows and Two Movies.' I'm listing this book despite the fact that it clearly shows its age and has some condition issues, because surprisingly it's a pretty rare book, and because I think it will be the Only first edition for sale on the Internet. I'm not going to linger too long on the condition. You can see the covers in the photos. There are some circular cup stains on the front and rear cover. There's a good deal of rough rub-through on the edges, particularly on the front middle edge. There's some fraying on the rear side of the spine. There's a tear off the bottom edge of the spine. The book is decently bound. The front cover has a little bit of give when you pull at it from the side but I'm not seeing any cracks or spaces between the covers and any of the early pages. I only saw one or two instances where there was a thin space at the juncture of two facing pages, all of these pages were securely bound. There is, at the juncture between some of the facing pages, (guessing a half a dozen or more) some darkening (I think people call that offsetting, not sure). It probably has to do with the binding material. It's a thin vertical tan line. They don't touch the print. The pages are actually quite clean. I did see two or three that had a smallish tear off their bottom edge, away from the print. There is a very light and vague top corner crease on most of the pages. It's pretty inconspicuous. The inside covers and end papers are a maroon color. They are clean and in good shape. That's pretty much the deal. There are no markings anywhere in the book. There are no attachments. It's NOT ex-library. And no one has written their name or anything else anywhere. Seller Inventory # 003097

About this Item: Simon and Schuster, New York, 1951. Hardcover. Stated First. Decorative mauve paper/boards. Tan cloth spine with maroon lettering and pink vine decoration. 244 pp. with color illustrations and bw line drawings by Doris Lee. Inscribed to Lee by Richard Rodgers on pre-title page. No dust jacket. A well-known book of classic songs by Richard Rodgers (composer) and Lorenz Hart (lyricist), who together worked on 28 musical shows and more than 500 songs. Rodgers chose the 47 contained in this volume, published after Hart's death, that he thought best represented their song-writing team. The charming foreword is by Rodgers's other musical partner, Oscar Hammerstein II and the introduction by Rodgers. Illustrations are by Doris Lee, a well-known American artist and Richard Rodgers's favorite illustrator. Rodgers's very heartfelt inscription on the pre-title is to Lee. The song sections are arranged chronologically, and there is an index of song titles, shows, and movies and a section with notes of Rodgers and Hart shows. VG all over but especially fine internally.
