About this Item: Penguin Books, 1950. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Good. 1st Edition. John Piper was an English painter, printmaker, stained-glass window designer, and stage designer for both operas and theatre. He is known for his unique depictions of landscapes and British church buildings. He was designated as an official war artist for World War II, and his depictions of war-damaged buildings and sites gained him public recognition and esteem. He illustrated quite a few books, one of which, "Romney Marsh" is here offered. Piper both wrote the text and illustrated the book. It was published in 1950 by Penguin Books in their King Penguin hardcover series (No. 55). The book is bound in blue and white marbled boards, and has a dust-jacket which replicates the colors of the binding. *************************** Piper was asked by Penguin to visit the Marsh , staying on to paint and draw the unique scenery, which is in the south of England, extending from Hythe to Rye, and which includes the Royal Military Canal, many dykes, Marsh sheep, and a great many old churches. There are a number of "lost villages in the area, which is in Kent and quite close to the Channel shore. The book is a lovely effort, combining monochrome drawings and water-color paintings, for which Piper used a limited color scheme on his palette, which perfectly captured the flat landscape and buildings. Piper's accompanying text is informative and genial; it is obvious that Piper was impressed by the beauty - and desolation - of the landscape. ********************************* SERIES : King Penguin (No. 55). / TITLE : Romney Marsh. / AUTHOR : John Piper (John Egerton Christmas Piper, 1903 - 1992). / IMPRINT : Penguin Books. / PLACE : Hammondsworth, Middlesex. / Piper, John ( DATE : 1950. / EDITION : First Edition. // Illustrated hardcover; Contains 16 monochrome illustrations and 16 color plate illustrations printed on calendered paper; contains a Bibliography; 52 pages (including the plate leaves); approx. 4 1/4" x 7"; blue, white & black marbled paper-covered boards with printed title labels on spine and front board; dust-jacket replicates the binding. ******************************** CONDITION - VERY GOOD - This is a previously owned book which remains clean and presentable, with the following imperfections and particulars noted : EXTERIOR - The head of the spine is bumped, with accompanying splitting (about to 1/8"); else exterior is clean and bright with strong color (no fading). / BINDING The boards have a slight yawn at the fore-edge; The book has obviously been read, the leaves opening widely, and exposing the binding mull at the hinges and through the text - however no leaves are detached or loose, and the whole remains fairly solid. / INTERIOR A previous owner affixed a clipping from a magazine in the form of an illustration depicting one of John Piper's works ("Shobdon Folly: Romanesque Fragments"); a couple of leaves have crimped fore-edge top corner tips (creased dog-ears) - else the interior is clean and free of marking, free of marginalia - no writing or signatures. / DUST-JACKET - GOOD PLUS - The spine panel is split at the head, and the panel as a whole weathered and somewhat darkened; edge wear includes scattered chipping and nicking; folds are rubbed; flaps are not clipped.the whole displaying decently and cleanly.
