Laid in loose is an Autograph Note Signed (ANS) by Elbert Hubbard, four lines plus on postcard-sized yellow letterhead ("The Roycroft Shop") printed in red. It is addressed to a client ("Mr. Gray") who seems to have been a subscriber for the deluxe editions of the press. Attractively bound Roycroft "Rubaiyat" in full green suede stamped in gilt and black, top edge gilt (two leaves have offset from clippings; some wear to silk endpapers (rear being loose; stain to front silk); minor wear to suede). This edition is illustrated by Elihu Vedder, whose visual interpretation of the Rubaiyat is highly regarded. The first printing was a folio, limited issue in 1884 of 100 copies signed by Vedder; followed by a trade edition in quarto in 1886. There were two issues of this 1894 printing; one in folio and this one in octavo (measuring approximately 6.25 x 8.5"). Brown, beveled, decorated-cloth boards; top edge gilt. Nice production with elaborate gilt cover design, decorated endpapers, and plates printed on joined leaves. A fine copy with only very minor rubbing on corners. Hand written number 36 of 125 Limited Edition copies SIGNED by the artist 'Stephen Gooden'. Rubáiyát over 63 pages carrying the 75 quatrains of Edward FitzGerald's version enriched with 4 full-page plates and 4 decorations by Stephen Gooden. The trade edition published in the same year contained the same plates, albeit were tipped-in and not full-page. Slight sun fading down the spine. Very Good condition book in Very Good peppermint green paper covered slip case carrying the correct limited edition number 36 for this book. Gooden's work can be found in the collections of the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, the Fitzwilliam Museum, Cambridge and the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, USA. SIGNED and dated: "Will Bradley Nov. 24 '97" and signed by owner:"Given me by Mr. Bradley Nov. 24th 1897 Mary Dwight Shurtliff." Very good condition except paste-on label gone from spine. Printed on rough-cut Strathemore paper with red decorations by Bradley. Thick paper-covered boards have green arabesque design, a small soil spot on front board. The book is tight and bright. Will Bradley (1868-1962)was a leading book designer in the forefront of the American Arts and Crafts movement. His posters, advertisements, book designs, and magazine covers are both striking and utilitarian. Spine label missing, part of underlying paper missing (about .5" on bottom). Solidly constructed with signatures as indicated and exquisite decorations. Overall very good condition. Rare signature. Size: 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. Signed by Illustrator. The hand signed etching by Willy Pogany tipped in at title page. All colour raised plates present and complete. Numerous illustratons and smaller raised plates in text, all by Pogany. Full green decorated leather boards look fresh and bright. Bright gilt on spine. Rough cut edges, apart from gilt on the top edge, which gilt is slightly worn at the corner. No marks in text or names inside. Original light marbled endpapers. One previous purchaser, Charles and Muriel Rycroft and thence to his second wife. Original green quarter crushed morocco, green cloth sides, titles to spine gilt, top edge gilt, others untrimmed, cream endpapers. In the original green card slipcase. A fine copy, the binding square and firm, the contents clean and without ownership marks. With 4 full sized plates and 4 small illustrations by Stephen Gooden. First edition thus, first printing, number 44 of 125 copies signed by the artist and specially bound. The text reprints FitzGerald's first published version of the Rubáiyát in 1859. Gooden (1892-1955) was an English artist who studied at the Slade School of Fine Art and is best known for his fine copper engravings. His work includes several banknote designs for the Bank of England, but only one was ever issued: a £5 note in February 1957 known as the Series B or "Helmeted Britannia". Collections of his engraved pictorial bookplates, including designs made for Queen Elizabeth II, can be found in the British Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Museum of Fine Arts in the US. Thomas Harry Saunders (19 September 1813, London 5 February 1870, Dartford), usually called T. H. Saunders, was a British paper-maker known especially for his watermarks. The Curwen Press was founded by the Reverend John Curwen in 1863 to publish sheet music for the "tonic sol-fa" system. based in Plaistow, Newham, east London, England, where Curwen was a pastor the press was at the vanguard of the design revolution that saw expression in British printing in the early 20th century. well-known graphic artists, including Eric Ravilious, Edward Bawden, Claud Lovat Fraser, Paul Nash and Barnett Freedman worked with Curwen.
