The Great Omar was described as "the most remarkable specimen of binding ever produced", the exterior decoration including 1,500 precious stones each separately set in gold. About this Item: Houghton Mifflin, Boston, 1894. Elihu Vedder (illustrator). Third printing, the smaller, octavo issue. This edition is illustrated by Elihu Vedder, whose visual interpretation of the Rubaiyat is highly regarded. The first printing was a folio, limited issue in 1884 of 100 copies signed by Vedder; followed by a trade edition in quarto in 1886. There were two issues of this 1894 printing; one in folio and this one in octavo (measuring approximately 6.25 x 8.5"). Brown, beveled, decorated-cloth boards; top edge gilt. Nice production with elaborate gilt cover design, decorated endpapers, and plates printed on joined leaves. A fine copy with only very minor rubbing on corners.
