SEE Harvard University Collection of Historical Scientific Instruments: "Charles Grover Smith [1888-1969] studied mathematics and physics at Harvard after graduating from the University of Texas. At Harvard, he worked under Theodore Lyman in the spectroscopy of helium gas. His work resolved a controversy between astronomer Edward Pickering and quantum physicist Niels Bohr, and also implied practical uses for helium in discharge tubes. Due to this work, in 1919, Vannevar Bush hired him for the laboratory of the Amrad company, where he developed the gas rectifier known as the S-Tube in 1922. AmRad went out of business and American Appliance Co. (later Raytheon) was founded, also associated with Vannevar Bush. The company purchased Smith's patents and hired him to continue his development work resulting in the practical development of AC-DC rectifiers that permitted connecting radios to the electric grid. This gave the company a solid head start in the radio business, and it was renamed Raytheon." SEE "Amrad S-Tube" ['S' for Smith) "Vannevar Bush hired for the Amrad Laboratory Charles Grover Smith, who had studied mathematics and physics at Harvard after graduating from the University of Texas. Smith worked quietly in the lab with his rare gas mixtures and spectroscope, accumulating data among reports known among Amrad people as the "S" or "Smith" papers. . . ." \SEE Wikipedia entry for Vannevar Bush: "In 1924, Bush and [Laurence K.] Marshall teamed up with physicist Charles G. Smith, who had invented a voltage-regulator tube called the S-tube. The device enabled radios, which had previously required two different types of batteries, to operate from mains power. Marshall had raised $25,000 to set up the American Appliance Company on July 7, 1922, to build silent refrigerators, with Bush and Smith among its five directors, but changed course and renamed it the Raytheon Company, to make and market the S-tube. The venture made Bush wealthy, and Raytheon ultimately became a large electronics company and defense contractor."
