Tan boards with sharp and distinct black lettering on front cover and spine; some nugatory offsetting along inner hinges; slight rubbing wear along spine edges near ends; spine SLIGHTLY darker tan than rest of tan boards (All lettering eminently bold); text pages uniformly, lightly age-toned: describes worse than it is, but there you have it. Binding strong (NO cracks); corners sharp (NO bumps or curls). At Harvard, he worked under Theodore Lyman in the spectroscopy of helium gas. His work resolved a controversy between astronomer Edward Pickering and quantum physicist Niels Bohr, and also implied practical uses for helium in discharge tubes. Due to this work, in 1919, Vannevar Bush hired him for the laboratory of the Amrad company, where he developed the gas rectifier known as the S-Tube in 1922. AmRad went out of business and American Appliance Co. (later Raytheon) was founded, also associated with Vannevar Bush. The company purchased Smith's patents and hired him to continue his development work resulting in the practical development of AC-DC rectifiers that permitted connecting radios to the electric grid. This gave the company a solid head start in the radio business, and it was renamed Raytheon."
