SCOTT FITZGERALD. 1923 1st edition, 1st printing (with "Published April, 1923" printed on the copyright page); Charles Scribner's Sons; New York. There are two pages of publisher's advertisements at the back. Hard Cover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. First Edition. First edition, one of 7650 copies (Bruccoli A10.I.a). Lacks scarce jacket. Middle portion of spine faded, minimal diminishment of gilt titles on spine - a common problem with this edition (this copy is better than we usually see), a few small spots on margins of fore edge, ink number on front endpaper, Brentano's bookplate on rear endpaper. 1923 Hard Cover. 145, [7] pp. 8vo. A play developed from a short story. It was Fitzgerald's only play, and was published two years before The Great Gatsby, which was his most popular work. Scribner printed 7650 copies, but the play was not a commercial success, despite showcasing Fitzgerald's facility with dialogue. Still a must for the serious Fitzgerald collector.
First Edition. Tiny name stamp on the front free endpaper; a fine copy. All books described as first editions are first printings unless otherwise noted.

Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First edition. Spine lettering dull, a very good copy lacking the dustwrapper. For reasons unknown to us, this copy is Inscribed by Harold H. Knerr, probably the foremost illustrator of the Katzenjammer Kids: "With kindest wishes & best wishes from yours sincerely, Harold H. Knerr." Beneath his inscription, Knerr has drawn his two greatest creations, the mischievous Katzenjammer Kids, Hans and Fritz. Originally created by Rudolph Dirks in 1897, and based on the "Max und Moritz" cartoon pranksters and bad boys created by German artist Wilhelm Busch. Knerr took over the cartoon in 1914, after a lawsuit between the Hearst and Pulitzer papers, and continued until his death in 1949, and created the version of the Katzenjammers best known today. A pleasing little inscription drawing connecting the "bad boy" comic icons to the infant terrible of the 1920s literary world. Fitzgerald's only play.

Hardcover. First Edition. Fitzgerald's last book published before his masterpiece THE GREAT GATSBY which had a print run of 20,870 copies while this book had only 7,650 published. As with the better known GATSBY, this title, Fitzgerald's only published full-length play, also explores the American Dream but here with more comic intent and more pathetic results. The main character, Jerry Frost, strives to be President of the United States, if he is unable to make it as a postman. The quotation Fitzgerald places on the center of the title page sums it up: "Any man who doesn't want to get on in the world, to make a million dollars, and maybe even park his toothbrush in the White House, hasn't got as much to him as a good dog has -- he's nothing more or less than a vegetable." Bruccoli A 10.I.a Slight foxing to the endpapers. Fine and bright in a Very Good, unrestored example of the uncommon dustwrapper that has a light stain at the bottom portion of the spine and an inch-deep chip at the top of the front cover obliterating most of the "T" in the word "The".
