Item Description: W. J. Widdleton ( Successor to J.S. Redfield)., New York, 1861. Cloth, Gilt Lettering. Book Condition: Fair - Good. Later Printing.. pp: 278. Engraved frontispiece by F. Halpin. Owner's name to first blank, dated 1861. Cracked at title-page, with some weakness at pp. 96/97. Generally speaking the text is clean, with just a couple of pages with minor soiling; a quarter-inch of the top edge ( almost at the corner) of pp. 170 -215 has a small stain which may have made the stock brittle as it is scored to a depth of about 1mm, with the extreme tip of tree leaves being missing ( about 2mm.). All edges gilt. The binding is blue cloth blind-stamped and ruled to both boards , titled and decorated in gilt to the spine. Boards are worn through at all corners; spine has splits to both edges. Not overly attractive externally, but still a scarce early printing of Poe that would greatly benefit from a trip to a good binder. Size: 24mo - over 5" - 5¾" tall. Book. Item Description: London: Addey and co, 1853., 1853. First UK edition (hardback). 12mo (18cm by 12cm), xxxii, 144pp, 8pp adverts. 20 illustrations by E H Wehnert, James Godwin, F W Hulme and Harrison Weir. The book is bound in the publisher's green cloth, but the binding has been rebacked retaining only part of the original spine (the result is not pleasing aesthetically). There is some scattered foxing of the contents, a short ownership insciption to the front free endpaper, and chipping to the edges of the front free endpaper. Only a good minus copy overall, but a rare and desirable book, and could be rebound. Bookseller Inventory # 42142
