Item Description: Redfield, New York, 1850. Hardcover. Book Condition: Good. No Jacket. First edition. First edition, first issue, with an interesting literary association. Book is the first issue with ads including note that the American Drawing Book "was published on the first of April." With bookplate and (partially obscured) signature of author and statesman Maunsell Bradhurst Field on repaired original front endpaper. Field served in the Treasury under Lincoln, among many posts that brought him into contact with important poltical and literary figures. His books included "Memories of Many Men and of Some Women", 1874, which includes an account of his seeing Poe at a Boston lecture. Of Poe, Field observed "I have seen no portrait of Poe that does justice to his pale, delicate, intellectual face and delicate eyes." Undoubtedly, one such portrait Field had in mind was the frontis portrait in his own copy of Poe's Works. Accompanying this Poe volume is a first edition copy of Field's "Memories of Many Men." in very good condition. Field's glowing impression of Poe can are found in full on pages 224-225. Field also comments critically on Griswold's infamously harsh portrayal of Poe -- an interest also evident in Field's book, where Field has marked in pencil two passages pertaining to Poe's reputation, including one favorable to Poe by N.P. Willis, a figure Field identifies as a well known friend in "Memories of Many Men." In all, an intriguing literary association. Poe's Works were published in two volumes, the second of which was mostly Poetry. This Tales volume contains the first book appearance of several of Poe's most famous tales, including The Tell-Tale Heart, the Masque of Red Death and the Cask of Amontillado. Original brown cloth, top inch of spine cloth (not affecting lettering) expertly replaced. Repairs to front free endpaper, which had once been pasted down. Else, internally very good.
