About this Item: V.p. [Unwin, Heinemann, Methuen, etc.], London, 1917. 20 vols. 8vo. First editions or first London editions. First editions or first London editions. 20 vols. 8vo. 'My biggest creative effort': Conrad to his American publisher. Choice collection of the great novelist's work, with three titles warmly inscribed to Nelson Doubleday, who in 1923 was a vice president in the family firm. His father, F.N. Doubleday, had been Conrad's American publisher since 1913 (largely on the initiative of Alfred A. Knopf, who got his start as a young employee of Doubleday). Doubleday père helped pull strings when the outbreak of war found the Conrads in Austrian Poland. Conrad had completed writing Victory on 28 June 1914, and with his family had embarked on a tour of the continent. Through the intervention of the American ambassador in Vienna, they reached Italy just ahead of orders to intern Conrad.Conrad "was in constant demand both in England and in America. Yet when he finally visited America in 1923, it was only because Doubleday made it impossible for him to resist" (Karl, p. 850). They stayed at the Doubleday estate in Oyster Bay and the Doubleday firm was instrumental in the realization of the uniform editions of Conrad's works (including the Sun Dial, Deep Sea, and Memorial Editions). The inscribed books are:Nostromo (Harper, 1904), inscribed "My biggest creative effort. Signed with loved for Patty and Nelson Doubleday Joesph Conrad."Almayer's Folly (Unwin, 1895), "Signed for my find friends Patty and Nelson Doubleday with the greatest regard, Joseph Conrad."Victory (Methuen, 1915), inscribed with quotation: "For P & N Doubleday '. seeking for his glance in the shades of death.' p. 410 Affectionately, Joseph Conrad."And also including:An Outcast of the Islands (Unwin, 1896)Tales of Unrest (Unwin, 1898)The Nigger of the "Narcissus". A Tale of the Sea (Heinemann, 1898)Lord Jim. A Tale (Blackwood, 1900)The Inheritors. An Extravagnt Story (Heinemann, 1901) with Ford Madox HuefferYouth: A Narrative and two other stories (Blackwood, 1902)Typhoon and other stories (Heinemann, 1903)Romance. A Novel (Smith, Elder, 1903) with Ford Madox HuefferThe Mirror of the Sea. Memories and Impressions (Methuen 1906)The Secret Agent. A Simple Tale(Methuen, 1907)A Set of Six (Methuen, 1908)Under Western Eyes (Methuen, 1911)'Twixt Land and Sea. Tales (Dent, 1912)Some Reminiscences (Eveligh Nash, 1912)Chance. About this Item: 1925. "CONRAD, Joseph. The Collected Works. Garden City: Doubleday, 1925-26. Twenty-three volumes. Octavo, original full cream parchment gilt, top edges gilt, uncut and mostly unopened, inner plain paper dust jackets with outer blue paper dust jackets printed on spines. $7500.Signed limited "Memorial Edition," number 57 of only 99 sets signed by Conrad, with engraved frontispiece plate in each volume. Sets of the complete works of Conrad are scarce; signed sets are particularly rare. A beautiful set in the original dust jackets. Conrad did not publish his first novel until the age of 38, but his work earned him a place with the great modernists of the 20th-century, "among the very great novelists in the language" (Drabble, 225). "Conrad's work at its best achieved a synthesis of theme, treatment, and language of a kind without precedent in English literature Novelty of theme and the piquancy of a non-English origin established him as a romantic, almost as a legendary figure. His stories had excitement of a new kind, and his style, by its very queerness, could allure powerfully achieving a perfect equilibrium of pictorial and narrative style" (DNB). This edition was originally intended to be 377 copies, each signed by Conrad. As he died after having only signed 99 sets, the plan was changed and the signed sheets became part of this Memorial Edition. Includes all of his major and minor works, with several posthumously published stories and essays. Minor chipping to edges of some wrappers only. Fine condition.". Signed. Seller Inventory # 106223

About this Item: J.M. Dent & Sons, London, 1923. Octavo, original cloth, 22 volumes. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper of Almayer's Folly and Tales of Unrest, "To Claudine and Allan Wade from their friend Joseph Conrad 1923." The recipients, Allan and Claudine Wade was an actor, director, bibliophile and founder of The Phoenix Society. In excellent condition. Joseph Conrad was a Polish-British writer regarded as one of the greatest novelists to write in the English language. He joined the British merchant marine in 1878, and was granted British nationality in 1886. Though he did not speak English fluently until he was in his twenties, he was a master prose stylist who brought a non-English sensibility into English literature. Conrad is considered an early modernist, though his works still contain elements of 19th-century realism. "His narrative style and anti-heroic characters have influenced many authors, including T. S. Eliot, William Faulkner, Graham Greene, and Salman Rushdie" (John Stape, The Many Lives of Joseph Conrad). Seller Inventory # 22019

About this Item: London The Gresham Publishing Co. 1925-1928, 1928. 22 volumes. The scarce and handsome Medallion Edition. With frontispiece illustrations to the volumes and titles printed in black and red. 8vo, in the publisher's original blue cloth, the upper covers with medallion profile portraits of Conrad. A very fine and handsome set. A very distinguished looking set of Conrad's works. The tasteful presentation is fitting to this master prose stylist who brought a non-English sensibility into English literature. His stories and novels, many with nautical settings, depict the trials of the human spirit in the midst of an impassive, inscrutable universe. His narrative style and anti-heroic characters have influenced many authors, including F. Scott Fitzgerald, William Faulkner, Ernest Hemingway, André Malraux, George Orwell, Graham Greene, Gabriel García Márquez, John le Carré, V. S. Naipaul, Philip Roth, J. M. Coetzee, and Salman Rushdie. Seller Inventory # 28610
