Sally Lockhart is first introduced in The Ruby in the Smoke when she is sixteen or so and is plac…ed under the care of her father's cousin in Islington. Sally's high intelligence opens a career path for her as a financial consultant and she soon falls in love with brilliant photographer Frederick Garland who is later killed in a tragic accident. All four novels were expected to be adapted into TV movies by BBC Drama and broadcast on BBC One in the UK, with Billie Piper cast in the role of Sally Lockhart. The first story, The Ruby in the Smoke, aired on 27 December 2006. The second, The Shadow in the North, aired on 30 December 2007.

The spine is not creased, so the book appears to be unread. The copyright page shows the full number line 1 through to 10 indicating the very first edition of this early Pullman book. The fine black dust jacket, with the price in sterling, is not price clipped and has no blemishes. The titles are in orange, blue and white on the cover and spine, with a cover illustration of Sally Lockhart by John Hancock. The book and jacket are in pristine condition and look as though they have just been published, instead of being over 25 years old. This is a fine copy of the book, regarded by many as the best book, in the award winning Sally Lockhart trilogy. Clear removable archival film protects the pristine dust jacket. One is a very rare rogue copy and the other is an example of its replacement. The rogue copy lacks the final paragraph of the book on what should be numbered page 392. The replacement co…py is the corrected version. When I first discovered this error in 2003, I wrote to Philip Pullman and he replied in a lovely letter in June 2003, explaining just what had happened. This is the essence of what he wrote: "I was very interested to see the rogue copy .because I thought they'd all been withdrawn. This is what happened: The book was due to be published in Spring 1991. On Christmas Eve 1990, I was about to go shopping with my wife. when the postman came with a jiffy bag containing an advance copy .I flicked through it, .waiting for my wife. It gave metime to look at the past (ie last) paragraph, which was always oneof my favourites. To my astonishment, the silly b*****s had just left it out. I couldn't believe it. I phoned Puffin at once .and found my editor about to go off and do jolly things for Christmas. I managed to spoil that for him by telling him what I'd discovered.He was appalled; someone had blundered. Anyway, they recalled all the copies that had been printed . in order to substitute a last page properly printed on both sides and containing the last paragraph. That was long before I had any expectation of my books becoming collectable objects.although every time I see a hardback Tiger I inspect the last page, I've never seen another one from that day to this. So your copy was the one that got away. Yours, Philip" The sale comprises the two books, both of which are signed by Philip Pullman in blue ink to the title page, plus the original typewritten and signed letter from the author. Whilst Pullman has won the Carnegie Medal, the Guardian Children's Fiction Award, the Smarties Prize and Children's Book of the Year at the British Book Awards it was only the final instalment of the His Dark Materials trilogy (which even made the Booker prize longlist and then went onto win the prestigious Whitbred Book of the Year) that seems to have garnered him the popular acclaim he undoubtedly deserves.
