Item Description: Charles L. Webster and Company, New York, 1885. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very good. First Edition, First State. 366 p. Portrait of Huck. Another of Mark Twain, from the bust by Karl Gerhardt. 174 illustrations. Illus. chapter headings. Also issued in blue cloth. Rebound with original spine and cover attached. Some pages repaired. A few small spots and smudges. The debate over the first edition of Huckleberry Finn is now almost a century old. The intent always was to decide, once and for all, which issue of Huck Finn was the earliest; but each writer, in effect, only added to the confusion. The best advice to collectors is to look for copies that have the most first issue points. This copy has seven of the eight points. Points in this volume (taken from Ahearn and the Mark Twain Bibliography) are: 1. Copyright notice dated 1885. 2. Earliest state: p.(13): "Him and another man" listed incorrectly at p.88. Later state: p.(13): "Him and another man" listed correctly at p. 87. 3. p. 57: 11 up: "with the was." Later state: "with the saw." 4. p. 155, folio: final 5 absent. 5. p. 161, signature mark 11 absent. 6. Not present. P. 283, fly-line of trousers a definite curve. 7. Portrait frontispiece; cloth under bust visible; "Heliotype" imprint. Later state: cloth not visible. 8. "l" missing in Col. That is part of the illustration; "b" in body, line 7, broken. Item Description: Dawson Brothers, Publisher, Montreal, 1885. First Canadian Edition. First Canadian Edition. Very Scarce. 4to., pp. 366. Maroon cloth, gilt lettered at the spine. A very good copy with some expert archival restoration at the extremities of the spine panel, endpapers renewed. A superior travail. Very interesting mixed points: frontis. Kemble portrait of Huck with rabbit & numerous in-text illustrations; Early copyright notice dated 1884; p.13, the illustration captioned "Him and another man" is listed at p.88 not p.87 as in later copies; p.57, the eleventh line from the bottom reads "with the was" not "with the saw" as in later copies; p.155, has a slightly different typeface for the final "5" in the page number; p.161, has the signature mark, "11"; p.283 is integral without a pronounced curve to the trousers. An interesting note concerning the manufacture of this book. When in the hands of the our book restorer, archivalist & surgeon doing the masterful open-hearth cutting, the spine lay bare, revealing that the binding had been built-up with contemporan eous clippings from a Boston newspaper leading one to postulate that the Canadian edition might have indeed been bound in the US.
