  • Seller image for Trollope, a Commentary by Michael Sadleir, 1927 First Edition Published by Constable & Co. in London. Critical Biography of Anthony Trollope, the Great Victorian Era Novelist OP for sale by Brothertown Books

Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Here is "Trollope : A Commentary" by Michael Sadleir. This is the 1927 First Edition, published by Constable & Co. in London, which has an Addendum slip affixed within the Appendix. Anthony Trollope was one of the most successful and popular of Victorian novelists. His extraordinarily prolific production covered all areas of Victorian society, encompassing marriage, inheritances, all sorts of family problems, and political intrigues - of which how can one have any politics without intrigue? Also covered in detail is Anthony's mother, Frances Trollope, an established author in her own right and a distinctive influence on her son. Some handsome illustrations accompany what is a most fascinating read These include portraits, pictures of family properties, maps , and caricatures (AnthonyTrollope being a favorite target of satiric cartoonists). *************************************** TITLE : Trollope : A Commentary/ AUTHOR : Michael Sadleir (Michael Thomas Harvey Sadleir, 1888 - 1957) Sadleir was a publisher and editor (for Constable & Co., of which he was Director and Chairman), novelist, literary scholar, biographer, art and book collector, and bibliographer. He was romantically involved with Rupert Brook, was considered an expert on the art of Kandinsky, of whose works he was one of the earliest collectors; and whose seminal text on "the Spiritual in art" Sadleir translated. He was a noted expert on Trollope and Gothic novels (He proved the the 'horrid novels' of Jane Austen's "Northanger Abbey" were not titles invented by Austen, but actually existed - and he subsequently found them! . and he accomplished much else (for those interested - read the Wikipedia article on Sadleir, from whence I've gathered much of the above). / IMPRINT : Constable & Co. / PLACE : London / DATE : 1927 / EDITION : First Edition (with Addendum slip bound in at Appendix) / PHYSICAL DETAILS : Trade hardcover, contains 8 plate illustrations, including Frontispiece portrait with tissue guard, and a folding map (Plates printed on calendered paper); 3 illustrations printed with the text; contains footnotes, 5 Appendices, and an Index. [x] + 432 pages; 5 1/2' x 8 5/8"; brown, cloth-covered boards and spine, with gilt lettering on spine; buff end-papers. Bottom edge of text-block rough cut. ************************************* CONDITION -- GOOD PLUS -- This is a previously owned book that remains clean and serviceable, with the following particulars noted : EXTERIOR -- Spine extremities are compressed and have fraying and slight chipping, accompanied by small loss of cloth surface (Hence the condition grade). Spine and boards adjacent to spine are faded; the gilt lettering on the spine is still quite legible, if not as bright as when first issued; the cloth over the front joint is split a bit from the top down for about 3 inches (Again, hence the condition grade); else the boards are clean with but moderate surface rub; the bottom edges of the boards have a couple of dents. Text-block edges are lightly toned, else clean. / BINDING -- The book has been read and thus is not as tight as when issued , the leaves opening widely. However no leaves are detached or loose, and the text-block is not shaken. / INTERIOR - Several of the leaves have considerable toning and foxing, including the recto of the frontispiece, and the title page; the tissue guard for the frontispiece is considerably darkened, and has lent a slight darkening to the frontispiece, itself. A few leaves have small nicks and tears at the fore-edges. The end-papers are mildly toned. The front paste-down has a previous owner's bookplate (Norman O. Keim - an author and resident of Syracuse, NY - I do not think he was the original owner, the bookplate being of a later style). All and all the book is nicely preserved.
