About this Item: Henry Altemus Company, 1894. Hardcover. Condition: Good. Dust Jacket Condition: No Jacket As Issued. Uncle Tom's Cabin: or, Life Among the Lowly by Harriet Beecher Stowe was published by Henry Altemus,Manufacturer, Philadelphia, in 1894. This ex-church library(although very lightly marked as such), 634-page, 4" X 5 7/8", 118-year-old offering is in G condition. Despite its advanced years, this book is in surprisingly sound shape, physically. There is some modest yellowing of its endpapers front and back as well as the pages of text(speaking of which, a small section of pages, 363-398, were found to be practically detached from surrounding body of text). I have tried to reinstall, with glue and the passage of time, Reader. There is some reasonably noticeable shelf wear at top and bottom edges of volume's spine, and much less so at the four outer tips of front and back cover boards. The sole library marking I observed is "Buckland Church Library", stamped in bold, smallish, black capital letters, in the center of the front loose end page.Told in some 44 chapters, the final chapter of the novel, decrying the inhuman savagery of the Institution of Slavery in America, is followed by Chapter 45, the author's "Concluding Remarks". From said remarks, ".There are multitudes of slaves temporarily owned, and sold again, by merchants in Northern cities; and shall the whole guilt or obloquy of slavery fall only on the South? Northern men, Northern mothers, Northern Christians, have something more to do than denounce their brethren at the South; they have to look to the evil among themselves." Originally published in serial form in the Washington abolitionist paper, "The New Era"(edited by a Dr. Bailey), segments of what would become the novel, Uncle Tom's Cabin, caught the eye of Boston publisher, J.P. Jewett, who convinced Harriet Beecher Stowe to allow him to, indeed, make her story available to the nation, and the world. Uncle Tom's Cabin, originally published on March 20, 1852, sold some 25,000 copies in its first two weeks, and over 300,000 copies throughout America by the end of that year. The novel was eventually translated into 21 different languages as its remarkable appeal/message spread around the world. It is one of those special works of literature that carved its own place in the history of, in this instance, the United States, and did as much as anything else to bring about one of the bloodiest periods in any nation's existence, our nearly five-year-long Civil War. There are some 5-6 black and white, full page Illustrations(the Artist of which is unknown to yours truly, sadly) seen periodically that wonderfully complement Stowe's real life saga. They may well be reproductions of the original Illustrations from the 1852 edition--I simply do not know, but they surely make this offering that much more complete as a not-very-pretty slice of mid-19th century Americana. Thank you!!. Seller Inventory # 005543
