(Förordet:) "Den ryktbara målarinnan madame Marie Louise Elisabeth Vigée Lebrun, hvilkens berömda memoarer här för första gången återgifvas på vårt språk, var född i Paris 1756 och dog därstädes 1842. Hon var dotter till Louis Vigée, en ganska medelmåttig pastellmålare, och blef 1776 gift med M. Lebrun, en känd konsthandlare och framför allt en passionerad spelare. Hennes stora rykte som porträttmålarinna förde henne i beröring med en stor del af den tidens märkligaste män och kvinnor så väl i Frankrike som äfven i de många öfriga europeiska länder, dit hon tog sin tillflykt för att undfly den stora revolutionens stormar. Med sin skarpa iakttagelseförmåga och stora människokännedom samlade hon under sin skiftesrika lefnad ett utomordentligt rikt material till den tids- och personalhistoria, som hon efterlämnat i sina i otaliga upplagor utgifna minnen.
