Volume I is signed and inscribed on the half-title page: To Lady Brownrigg with the Author s compliments, Oct. 12, 1905, Rob. F. Scott . Very Rare being signed by Scott. Conrad p. 121; Spence 1050, Renard 1372, Rosove 286.A1a (with errata). A classic of expedition literature as Scott mixes geographical, scientific and metaphysical observations with the sure hand of an Edwardian gentleman. Conrad 121 Additionally, two lengthily inscriptions/poems have been penned on the rear end-page of Volume II. The second eight-line verse appears to be penned by Scott due to similarities in the script style of Scott s inscription and signature on the half-title page. The first inscription reads: There is something greater in great men than their talents, for the most consummate talents in themselves will not make a great man. There is in them besides their talents, their spirit, their character, that magnetic fluid, as it were, that enables them to influence their fellow men, which makes them a binding and stimulating power. The second poem appears to be by Scott's hand and reads: Think what a pageant of immortal acts, Done in the unapproachable face of time. By the high, transcending human mind . Think of the soldiers and priests; Artists, & captains of discovery, God's chosen, His adventures esp the heights of thought & deed how many of them that led The forlorn hopes of the world!. About this Item: Smith, Elder & Co., 1905. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. Two volumes. First edition, first issue; 8vo; original ribbed dark blue cloth, covers with raised gilt medallions, spines lettered in gilt, top edges gilt; photogravure frontispieces, plates, two maps loosely inserted in end-pocket of each volume. Presentation inscription in Volume II, Jessie E. Royds Autumn. 1905 C. This is presumed to be from Charles Royds to his wife. The first volume has the ownership inscription of Jessie Royds, dated October 1905. From 1901 to 1904, Royds was First Lieutenant of the RRS Discovery on Robert Falcon Scott's National Antarctic Expedition. He also served as meteorologist and one of the unofficial photographers on the expedition. Cape Royds in Antarctica was named after him. Numerous full page illustrations by Wilson and others members of the expedition, 12 coloured plates in facsimile from Wilson s sketches. An elaborate and handsome publication from the first major British effort in the Antarctic, partially subsidised by public institutions. Intended to be published simultaneously by Smith Elder and John Murray, only one or two copies of the first issue have appeared with dust jackets. Accordingly, truly fine copies are rare. Very good, a little wear to the extremities, especially spine ends, medallions a little rubbed as usual, spine darkened and hinges a little weak in both volumes. Seller Inventory # 2253

About this Item: Smith Elder, London, 1905. Hardcover. Condition: Good +. Unrecorded Times Book Club edition. This unusual printing was offered through the The Times (London) as part of the newly formed Times Book Club, organized by Horace Everett Hooper and C. F. Moberly Bell in 1905. The Book Club was set up to run a circulating library, its main aim to increase Times circulation, which it did. Subscribers paid 3 pounds 18s per year, on the promise that a subscriber would get "the books he asked for on the very day he asked for them" (Publisher's Weekly, 1906, Vol. 70, p1304). When the books became "second-hand", they were to be sold to the subscribers at reduced prices. This would be one of those copies. It is in a slightly different binding than the first edition, with a Times Book Club crest on the lower spine and without the gilt medallion on the front cover. After careful comparison with a first edition, these sheets appear to be identical to the first run of 3,000 copies. The sheets are trimmed at the foredge and base making this copy slightly smaller than a Smith Elder first edition. The typeface on the spine differs and there is a flat tooled line at the top and bottom of the spine and boards (gilt on the spine, blind on the boards.) The Book Club commenced in 1905 and the publication date of "Discovery" was 12th October 1905. The Book Club, and Horace Hooper's tenure at The Times as advertising director ended in 1908, with the arrival of the new proprietor, Lord Northcliffe, who was a substantial contributor to the "Discovery" expedition. In 36 years of specializing in Polar books, we have never had a London Times Book Club edition. We have seen copies with the Times Book Club sticker within, but not this binding. This binding is not recorded in Rosove, but conforms to Rosove 286. A1 within.8vo, 2 volumes: 556pp, photogravure frontispiece from a drawing by Dr. Wilson, 7 color plates, 1 double page plate, 119 b&w mostly photographic illustrations, illustrations in text, 3 maps (&) 508pp, photogravure portrait, 6 color plates, 4 double page plates, 124 b&w mostly photographic illustrations, index, 2 maps. Contains both maps in the back pockets. Scattered light foxing in both volumes. With no advertisements at the rear, no extra slips and no dust wrapper, conforms to Rosove 286. Top edges gilt. Spines slightly sunned, a bit ruffled at spine head of Volume I. Seller Inventory # 22629

About this Item: Smith Elder & Co., London, 1905. Original Blue Cloth Hardback. Condition: Very Good. Second Impression. 1905. Second impression. xx, 556pp. in volume 1 and xii, 508pp. in volume 2. Top edges gilt. There are a total of 260 full-page and smaller illustrations by Dr. E.A. Wilson and other members of the expedition, photogravure frontispieces, 12 coloured plates in facsimile from Dr. Wilsons' sketches, panoramas, and maps (including a folding chart of the Antarctic Ocean in a pocket at the end of volume 1 and chart showing sledge journeys from winter quarters in a pocket at the end of volume 2). Captain Robert Falcon Scott (1868-1912) was a British Royal Navy officer and explorer who led two expeditions to the Antarctic regions: the Discovery Expedition (1901-1904) and the ill-fated Terra Nova Expedition (1910-1913). These two volumes contain his acount of the 'Discovery' expedition, known officially as the British National Antarctic Expedition. It was the first official British exploration of the Antarctic regions since James Clark Ross's voyage sixty years earlier. Organized on a large scale under a joint committee of the Royal Society and the Royal Geographical Society, the new expedition carried out scientific research and geographical exploration in what was then largely an untouched continent. The two volumes are uniformly bound in the original blue cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spines and a gold stamped impression of a medal on the front boards (the stamp on volume 1 is different to that on volume 2). The cases of the books are in very good condition with some expected shelf wear and and a little soiling and staining on the boards. There is a scrape to the cloth on the front board of volume 1 that extends out from the spine to about 3". The spine ends and bottom front corner of volume 2 are bumped. The contents are tight and clean with an inscription dated 1905 on the front free endpaper of volume 1. There is some light-moderate foxing on the endpapers and half-title pages. The fore edge of the text block in both volumes also has some foxing and on a few pages this has seeped a little way into the margin. PLEASE NOTE: Heavy books so extra will be needed for shipping to non-UK customers. Size: 9.6" Tall. Seller Inventory # Exploration029

About this Item: Smith, Elder and Co., London, 1905. Hardcover. Condition: Fair. Dust Jacket Condition: No Jacket as Published. A two-volume set in blue cloth boards. Volume one, a presumed first, has a gilt stamp to the front board representing the face of Captain Scott's Royal Geographical Society Medal and gilt top edge. Untrimmed pages. Boards are somewhat edge worn and bumped with edge wear and a little loss to the spine. Previous owner's inscription on end paper: "E. Aitkin(?)" Binding is cracked in places. Many illustrations and maps. Light foxing throughout. Chart of the Atlantic Ocean is still in the rear board pocket; the map has torn along the creases but all pieces are present. Volume two, a presumed first, has the reverse of Scott's medal, though the gilt is rather rubbed. Gilt top edge, which is rather rubbed. A green cloth shield has been stamped into the front board; presumably this has some library printing on it but has since worn off. Stamp to rear facing end paper: "Purchased from the library".
