Item Description: Rex Collings, 1972. Soft cover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. We are delghted to present for sale one of the few proof copies ever produced of 'Watership Down'. Rex Collings sent around ten copies to London reviewers in 1972. The tiny publishers who, legend has it, could not afford to even pay Adams' advance, produced the proof in a hurry. This is evident given the fact that the title of the book is handwritten on to the spine of the blue proof cover. There is no record of another proof selling within the last ten years and no other copy is presently available for sale at the time of writing. Given the fact that the book has sold over 50 million copies worldwide, this copy is perhaps the first time this story appeared in print. The book itself is bound into pale blue plain paper covers, onto which has been handwritten the title, presumably by the publisher or the recipient. It is in very good sound condition, has clearly been read more than once, the page edges are a bit grubby and the page corners are no longer sharp. This is in effect the text block of the true UK first edition. There is no fold-out map at the rear as there is in the proper trade edition, nor it appears has there ever been one. The dust jacket has clearly been with the book since new, it is the true first edition trade dust jacket (although the jacket is slightly longer than the book), in very good+ condition, with some wear to the folds and a couple of closed tears to the top of the spine where it has been handled carelessly, probably when removing it from a bookshelf. There is also a tiny piece missing to the right of the publisher's name, and the spine has faded a little also. A very scarce item and a must for any true Adams/Watership Down collector. THIS IS A SPECIAL SALE PRICE. Bookseller Inventory # 000300

Item Description: Rex Collings, London, 1972. First edition of the author's first and most beloved work. Octavo, original brown cloth. Signed by the author "Yours sincerely Richard Adams" on the title page. Laid in is a letter from Richard Adams assistant. Near fine in an excellent near fine dust jacket with light shelf wear. A very sharp copy. Although Watership Down was rejected by 13 publishers before Collings accepted it, it has never been out of print, and is Penguin Books' best-selling novel of all time. It won both the Carnegie Medal and the Guardian Prize. The title refers to a hill in the north of Hampshire, England, near the area where Adams grew up. The story has its roots in the tales that Richard Adams made up for his young daughters during long car journeys. As he explained in 2007 in an interview with the BBC, he "began telling the story of the rabbits . . . improvised off the top of my head, as we were driving along." He based the struggles of the animals on the struggles he and his friends encountered during the Battle of Oosterbeek in 1944. The daughters insisted he write it down—"they were very, very persistent." After some delay he began writing in the evenings and completed it 18 months later. Bookseller Inventory # 3715

Spine tips a trifle pushed otherwise a VG+ copy in like D/W with a patch of fading and some surface scratches to the middle of the spine. A very nice copy indeed. Signed by the Author on the title page in his customary red ink: "Yours sincerely/ Richard Adams/ England/ 14th December 2006". John Lawrence (who painted the superb illustrations in the subsequent limited edition of 1976) has painted (on the front free end-paper) a wonderful illustration, in water colours, of "First View of Watership Down". This has been signed by Lawrence below the painting. One of only two copies of this book that we are aware of which include an end-paper painting by John Lawrence. Signed by Author. Item Description: Rex Collings, London, 1972. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine-. First Edition. First Impression. 8vo: viii,413,[1]pp, with folding map by Marilyn Hemmett colored in outline. Publisher's cinnamon-colored cloth, spine lettered in gilt, upper cover stamped in gilt with rabbit device; in mustard-colored illustrated dust jacket printed in black, priced £3.50. Inscribed by Adams on the title page: To Miranda Parrish / with best wishes from / Richard Adams / August 1973. Fine (probably unread), binding tight and square, corners firm and sharp, pages clean and crisp; just about Fine jacket with several short closed tears and light soiling to spine panel. Watership Down takes its title from the name of a hill in the north of Hampshire, where Adams grew up (and to which the small band of rabbits journey in their quest to establish a new home as they escape destruction of their warren). The novel, Adams' s first, was rejected by 13 publishers before Rex Collings accepted it, and it has never gone out of print (in fact, it is Penguin Books' s best-selling novel of all time). In the International Companion Encyclopedia of Children's Literature, Peter Hunt calls the book "the most successful single postwar animal story, which is almost ironic, considering that Watership Down is a gritty, often frightening tale in which characters die violent deaths or become maimed, and these facts of life are not disguised. Hunt quotes an interview with Adams, in which Adams said of his writing style, "I derived early the idea that one must at all costs tell the truth to children, not so much about mere physical pain and fear, but about the really unanswerable things—what Thomas Hardy called 'the essential grimness of the human situation.'" Adapted into an animated film featuring the voices of John Hurt, Ralph Richardson, Denholm Elliott and Zero Mostel. Note: With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed. Bookseller Inventory # BB1071

Item Description: Collings, 1972. First edition. Original brown cloth with gilt titles and rabbit vignette to upper cover, in brown pictorial dustwrapper. A near fine copy in a fine (price clipped) dustwrapper. Unusually tight and crisp with very faint offsetting marks from tape to the endpapers. Colour folding map at rear. The author's first book, printed in an edition of only 2000 copies by an obscure publisher due to the fact that, rather like Wind in the Willows some 64 years earlier, the publishers approached by the author considered a long and complex anthropomorphic tale would appeal neither to children nor adults. Needless to say, like Kenneth Grahame's tale, it has become a much loved book in both genres and is one of the classics of children's literature. The book was winner of the Carnegie Medal for children's literature in 1972. Bookseller Inventory # 32590

Item Description: 1972. 8vo. Original brown cloth lettered in gilt to spine, with a small gilt vignette of rabbits to upper board, preserved in original mustard-coloured pictorial dustwrapper; pp. [viii] + 413 + folding coloured map to rear; an unusually fresh copy; externally very clean and sharp with tiny bruising to heel of spine and a minor horizontal crease to head; internally fine bar a short marginal tear to inner edge of folding plate (now expertly and almost invisibly repaired to the reverse) and a little speckling to top edge of book block; the unclipped dustwrapper (£3.50) very fresh indeed with 4 short tears to joints (maximum 15mm), all archivally repaired with tissue to the reverse, and one similarly short closed tear to lower flap fold. First edition. A modern children's classic, and one of the most popular animal stories of the last century, selling 100,000 copies in its first year. The novel was originally rejected by all the publishing houses and finally accepted by the small firm of Rex Collings, which found itself with a phenomenal bestseller. It was awarded both the Carnegie Medal in 1972, and the Guardian Award for Children's Fiction in 1973, and was later filmed. It is an exciting epic tale about a colony of rabbits who have to flee their Berkshire warren when building works encroach, and search for a new home on the South Downs. Item Description: Rex Collings, London, 1972. Brown Cloth. Book Condition: Good. First Edition. 413pp. 1972. First edition. 8vo. A first edition copy in a super jacket. The jacket had been protected in a 70's/80's sleeve, which we removed to check for condition. It may have left the jacket ever so slightly loose fitting but there is no soiling and the ochre colour is bright and vivid. Not price-clipped. A very short nick to the tail of the rear flap with a light associated crease and a still lighter nick to the head of the same flap both expertly repaired and hardly noticable. A slight crease mark to the head of the rear panel and a similar one to the tail. Nevertheless, the jacket remains so well preserved - you would be very hard pushed to find a better jacket. The book is in good plus only condition. There is a strip of sellotape ghosting (very probably from the jacket - in no way affects the jacket itself) to the extreme leading edge of the front paste-down. The front endpaper is missing. There is a slight soil mark to the rear endpaper. Slight foxing to the upper fore-edge. A slight soil mark to the extreme lower corner of the title page - not heavy in anyway. Slight toning to the leading fore-edge. Otherwise a very clean, tight copy in original publisher's brown cloth boards - gilt embossed to the spine and front board - the gilt remains fresh and no marks to the boards which also appear fresh. The map too at the rear remains immaculate. A good plus copy with a super near fine or fine jacket of this important first edition. Shipping from the UK. Bookseller Inventory # 235939

Item Description: Macmillan Publishing Co., Inc., New York, 1972. First American edition of the author's first and most beloved work. Octavo, original half cloth. Signed and dated by the author in 1974 on the title page. Near fine in an excellent near fine dust jacket with light wear. Bookseller Inventory # 4556
