Item Description: Rex Collings, London, 1972. First edition of the author's first and most beloved work. Octavo, original brown cloth. Signed by the author on the title page, "Yours sincerely Richard Adams." Laid in is a letter from Richard Adams' assistant. Fine in an excellent near fine dust jacket with light shelf wear. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. A very sharp example. Although Watership Down was rejected by 13 publishers before Collings accepted it, it has never been out of print, and is Penguin Books' best-selling novel of all time. It won both the Carnegie Medal and the Guardian Prize. The title refers to a hill in the north of Hampshire, England, near the area where Adams grew up. The story has its roots in the tales that Richard Adams made up for his young daughters during long car journeys. As he explained in 2007 in an interview with the BBC, he "began telling the story of the rabbits . . . improvised off the top of my head, as we were driving along." He based the struggles of the animals on the struggles he and his friends encountered during the Battle of Oosterbeek in 1944. The daughters insisted he write it down—"they were very, very persistent." After some delay he began writing in the evenings and completed it 18 months later. Bookseller Inventory # 3715

Item Description: Macmillan, New York, 1974. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. First US edition, first printing (complete number line 10 - 1 on the copyright page. Earliest state of both book and jacket with all points present: cream colored cloth and paper covered boards (no tinge of green at all), "70003" on both book and jacket at their respective lower rear corners, British blurbs (only) on the jacket rear panel, $6.95 jacket price present, rabbit and compass on both front and rear of the jacket. A fine book in a fine dustjacket, both 'as new' with virtually no visible wear, clean, crisp, unread. The only thing that could possibly be cited as a 'flaw' on this copy is the slight separation of the top of the textblock from the backstrip of the cover - this is due to the unfortunate 'perfect binding' in the manufacturing process which makes this almost inevitable in most (if not all) copies. Other than this, this is about as close to flawless a copy as one could wish for - unblemished, uncreased, unfaded and unclipped. The publisher did not make the date of publication clear on the copyright page. Many dealers cite the 1972 copyright date as though it were the publishing date, but review slips have been noted with the date 1974. This has the ring of truth for me: in tiny printing, at the very bottom of the rear flap of the dustjacket (easily missed) is the following: "Jacket design and text copyright (c) 1974, Macmillan Publishing Co., Inc." I don't recall ever seeing any other description that cites this information, which does seem to nail things down, does it not?. Bookseller Inventory # 35
