Item Description: Rex Collings, London, 1974. Original Cloth. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 2nd Edition. 22 x 14cms (9" x 5.5"). PUBLISHING DETAILS: Signed by the author, this is a second edition, third reprint of his iconic novel, published by Rex Collings of London in 1974. 413 pages plus fold-out map at back. Size; 22 x 14 cms (9" x 5.5"). Weight; 690g (1 pound 8 ounces). CONDITION: I would rate the book and dustjacket as very good. The original blue-green covers, with gilt titling, are generally clean and sound. The binding is tight and secure throughout. The text and fold-out map are clean, bright and free from foxing. Richard Adams has flat signed, inscribed and dated the title page (see photo). The unclipped dustjacket is clean and complete, just a little worn at the extremities, with small, closed tears (see photo). It is now protected in a clear, removable Brodart sleeve. A rare, signed early edition of this classic tale. THE NOVEL: Watership Down is a classic adventure novel. Set in south-central England, the story features a small group of rabbits. Although they live in their natural environment, they are anthropomorphised, possessing their own culture, language (Lapine), proverbs, poetry, and mythology. Evoking epic themes, the novel follows the rabbits as they escape the destruction of their warren and seek a place to establish a new home, encountering perils and temptations along the way. Watership Down was Richard Adams' first novel and by far his most successful. Although it was rejected by several publishers before Collings accepted it, it won the annual Carnegie Medal, annual Guardian Prize and other book awards. It has been adapted as a 1978 animated film that is now a classic and as a 1999 to 2001 television series. (Source: Wikipedia). Signed by Author(s). Bookseller Inventory # 001383

Impressive first novel, an unsentimental view of nature and our relationship to it, a landmark in the Fantasy genre. SIGNED by the author on the title page and dated April 1974. Binding slightly cocked, as often the case with this poorly made book. Minor soiling to rear board and some spotting to the bulked text edges. Still Very Good in a Very Good or better dustwrapper. Item Description: Paradine, London, 1976. Limited edition, one of 250 numbered copies, this copy being number 10. Octavo, original full morocco bound by Sangorski and Sutcliffe.Raised bands, gilt titles and tooling to the spine, front panel with gilt stamping of two rabits, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers. Signed by Richard Adams and the illustrator. In fine condition with the original slipcase. Although Watership Down was rejected by 13 publishers before Collings accepted it, it has never been out of print, and is Penguin Books' best-selling novel of all time. It won both the Carnegie Medal and the Guardian Prize. The title refers to a hill in the north of Hampshire, England, near the area where Adams grew up. The story has its roots in the tales that Richard Adams made up for his young daughters during long car journeys. As he explained in 2007 in an interview with the BBC, he "began telling the story of the rabbits . improvised off the top of my head, as we were driving along." He based the struggles of the animals on the struggles he and his friends encountered during the Battle of Oosterbeek in 1944. The daughters insisted he write it down—"they were very, very persistent." After some delay he began writing in the evenings and completed it 18 months later. Bookseller Inventory # 3817
