Half-Leather. Condition: Very Good. 25 vols in total - a complete set of what appears to be the Library Edition set of the popular Waverley Novels, by Sir Walter Scott. In attractive half calf binding with marbled boards. This series of novels was first published in 1814. The series became widely read in Europe, being known simply as The Waverley Novels, due to Scott not taking public authorship until 1827. The novels are set over a period of a eight hundred years, from 1097 with 'Count Robert of Paris' to the 19th century with 'St. Ronan's Well'. Scott took inspiration from his homeland of Scotland, setting fifteen out of the twenty-five novels there. 'Waverley', the first novel in this series has since been widely credited as one of the first pieces of historical fiction. This wonderful 25 x Volume set of Waverley Novels comes in a branded slightly faded olive green, cloth covered box, with lift up lid and drop down front section. All books are in really good condition, normal wear and marks apply consistent with use and age. The branded box is a tad faded and worn, with small wear to top, showing a white mark. All books are beautifully black leather bound, only three of the twenty-five books, don't have their dust jackets. The other twenty-two books have dust jackets which states on the front cover of the dust jackets they are of India Paper. All books have silk bookmark attached. Each book measures 11cms wide x 1.5cms deep x 16cms tall. Please note that this is a large heavy boxed set of books and therefore postage/shipping may increase from listed price depending on final destination. I have put down the published date as 1901 however a couple of the books are dated 1902 and one is 1900. A stunning collections of novels that are worth preserving for future generations and just a nice set of books in a fabulous branded box. Ideal for collector's of Sir Walter's Scott's books.

Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Sir Walter Scott, The Waverley Novels (25 volumes) Centenary Edition set. Complete. This is a truly exceptional set in a beautiful fine binding by Zaehnsdorf. The Waverley Novels are published by Adam and Charles Black, Edinburgh, 1871, one hundred years after the birth of Scott. Printed by R & R Clark, in Edinburgh. The books feature beautiful steel engraved frontispieces and plates within each volume, after Sir David Wilkie, J. M. W. Turner, David Roberts and others. Each volume is bound with navy blue leather spines and corners, with gilt thistle motif decoration to the spine, along with raised bands and title labels. The spine labels are in red and tan morocco. Boards are covered in blue marbled paper and all three edges of the text block are marbled to match. Endpapers have a complementary blue marbled design and each volume has a navy blue cloth ribbon. A fine set, difficult to fault, and of very handsome appearance. Text pages are beautifully crisp and clean as are the plates, with no age spotting issues. Some mild offsetting to title page opposite frontispieces. Previous owner's ink stamp to half titles. Bindings firm and tight. Scott's importance to literature really cannot be overstated - his work was highly influential and immensely popular across Europe at the time of writing and for many years afterwards. Having seen countless Centenary sets over the years, this is the best we have seen. This set would grace the shelves of any library. Text in English. Weight: approximately 16kg (unpacked weight).
