About this Item: London: Methuen & Co. Ltd., 1945, 1945. Octavo. Finely bound by the Chelsea Bindery in dark blue morocco, titles and decoration to spine, raised bands, single rule to boards with pictorial motifs, twin rule to turn-ins, floral endpapers, gilt edges. A fine copy. With black and white illustrations. Signed copy of the 43rd edition, signed by Milne on the title page. Milne had no particular ambition to write for children, but in 1922 a glimpse of his two-year-old son Christopher being taught to pray by his nanny inspired him to compose the verse "Vespers", a gently ironic take on the innocence of childhood intended for an adult readership, which was published in Vanity Fair in January 1923. It proved popular, and Milne was asked to contribute to The Merry-Go-Round, a new periodical for children. The success of these pieces led him to consider writing further verses for children, and he composed most of When We Were Very Young as entertainment during a dreary holiday in Wales. Many of the poems first ran as weekly instalments in Punch, charmingly illustrated by fellow contributor Shepard. When We Were Very Young was first published in London on 6 November 1924 to immense acclaim, and the first printing sold out in one day. By the end of the year more than 53,000 copies had been printed of what The Times called "the greatest children's book since Alice" (Thwaite p. 286). Seller Inventory # 74406

About this Item: Methuen & Co., Ltd 1924-1928, London, 1924. First and early editions of each work in Milne's wonderful Pooh quartet. Octavo, four volumes, original cloth decorated in gilt. First edition of The House at Pooh Corner in the original dust jacket and early printings of each other volume. With When We Were Very Young and The House At Pooh Corner in the original dust jackets. Near fine in very good to near fine dust jackets. "Although Alan Alexander Milne wrote novels, short stories, poetry and many plays for adults, in addition to his work as assistant editor for Punch from 1906 to 1914, it is his writings for children that have captured the hearts of millions of people worldwide and granted Milne everlasting fame" (Silvey, 461). Milne wrote most of these poems at the request of friend and fellow poet Rose Fyleman, who was planning a new children's magazine. "On a rain-blighted holiday in Wales, [Milne] escaped from the crowd of fellow guests to the summerhouse, and for 11 days wrote a set of children's verses, one each day. 'There on the other side of the lawn was a child with whom I had lived for three years [his son, Christopher Robin]. and here within me were unforgettable memories of my own childhood.' He added more verses when he got home, enough for a book, and allowed some to be published in advance in Punch" (Carpenter & Prichard, 351). Shepard, a Punch staff artist at the time, provided delightful line vignettes, resulting in "a wonderful marriage of verse and vision. His delicately precise and fresh drawings had an instant appeal" (DNB). Seller Inventory # 108023

About this Item: Methuen, 1925. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. A.A. Milne (1925) When We Were Very Young , UK first deluxe edition, bound in blue leather, published by Methuen. In addition, an original letter handwritten and signed by Milne. This is an extremely rare edition and the least common of the four leather bound Winnie-the-Pooh books issued in a few hundred copies. When We Were Very Young was originally published in 1924 as a regular trade edition only. It was immediately successful and the first printing sold out in one day. The publisher Methuen then decided to issue a deluxe leather bound version in three colours: blue, red, and green. The paper stock of the seventh printing of the trade edition (March 1925) was used for that purpose. In 1926 when Winnie-the -Pooh was published it was issued as a deluxe leather bound edition in three colours as well keeping that tradition for the remaing Pooh books as well. Condition: a fine and abolutely beautiful copy. No previous owner s scribbles inside, the leather binding is crsip and clean like on the day of publication. No rubbing to the gilding. Page block edges gilded as called for. The original glassine wrapper is present and without any chips or tears, now of course yellowed as over 90 years have passed. The original box is near fine with no structural damage at all, with a whiff of foxing and toning as to be expected. The best condition on the marekt and extremely rare to find as the vast majority of deluxe copies are the second editions which used the tenth printing paper stock. The letter: Single page autograph letter, signed as A.A.Milne , on stationary with letterhead of 13, Mallord Street, Chelsea, S.W.3. Tel Flaxman 2074. Dated 4 vi 31 Expected center fold. Fine condition. A warm, jocular letter written by Milne to his dear longtime friends, the Seligmans. Both Milne and his wife Daphne would maintain a close rapport with this couple beginning in the early 1920 s: Dear Bobs, Thank you so much for the club. I tried it Friday and though it didn t play quite as well as yours did on that memorable afternoon when I had the pleasure of beating you at Ashdam Forest, I think it will get all right with a little practice. When it did hit the ball, it hit it a very long way, and as soon as it realizes that I m not going to (illegible) any nonsense from it we shall get along all right. So again my many thanks indeed; it was charming of you to send it. Yours ever A.A. Milne. Give my love to your husband and thank him again for his matches. The 18th anniversary of our wedding day! A.A. Milne played a fair amount of golf, in the mid-1920s he mentioned he got his handicap to 9 . In his autobiography published several years later, Milne talks about golf. To-day, I could be happy without a car, I could be happy without a country cottage, but I shouldn t be happy if I couldn t be reckless about golf balls, taxis, the best seats at cricket grounds and theatres, shirts and pullovers, tips, subscriptions, books and wine-lists. While discussing the creative process of writing Milne says, I have spent many mornings at Lords [Cricket Grounds] hoping that inspiration would come, many days on golf courses; I have even gone to sleep in the afternoon, in case inspiration came to take me completely by surprise. In vain. An amazing set. First and Fine. Signed by Author(s). Seller Inventory # ABE-1552662350776
