About this Item: Dutton, New York, 1924. Condition: Near fine in good only jacket. Signed limited first American edition, one of only 100 large paper copies signed by Milne (out of a total edition of 500), of the first book in the Winnie-The-Pooh series. When Milne - a successful playwright, novelist, and PUNCH columnist - decided to turn his hand to children's verse, his American publisher recalled the anxiety it occasioned: "We are all aware that probably the most hopeless kind of manuscript a publisher expects to receive from his favourite author is that of poetry for children" (quoted in Thwaite). Milne's goal with the collection was to write "Like Stevenson, only better" (referring to the classic CHILD'S GARDEN OF VERSES). Published only two weeks after the UK first, this first Pooh book would quickly become a phenomenon: since "Christopher Robin goes hoppity, hoppity, hop," one mother from New York recorded, "We all had to hop. We kept it up until I was overcome by exhaustion" (quoted in Thwaite). One of the 100 signed copies, especially retaining its dust jacket, is exceptionally desirable. 8'' x 5.25''. Original quarter green cloth, color pictorial boards. In original color pictorial dust jacket. Blue topstain, other edges uncut and partially unopened. Illustrated by Shepard with color jacket design and pictorial endpapers (neither of which appear in the U.K. edition) and black-and-white images throughout the text. xiv, 100 pages. Signed by Milne and Shepard on limitation page. Rubbing to bottom edge and tips of cloth, with marginal toning to boards: interior clean. Scarce jacket with wear, significant chipping (including top.5'' of jacket lack lacking on panels and spine), and extensive repairs. Seller Inventory # 18415

About this Item: Methuen, 1925. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. A.A. Milne (1925) When We Were Very Young , UK first deluxe edition, bound in blue leather, published by Methuen. In addition, an original letter handwritten and signed by Milne. This is an extremely rare edition and the least common of the four leather bound Winnie-the-Pooh books issued in a few hundred copies. When We Were Very Young was originally published in 1924 as a regular trade edition only. It was immediately successful and the first printing sold out in one day. The publisher Methuen then decided to issue a deluxe leather bound version in three colours: blue, red, and green. The paper stock of the seventh printing of the trade edition (March 1925) was used for that purpose. In 1926 when Winnie-the -Pooh was published it was issued as a deluxe leather bound edition in three colours as well keeping that tradition for the remaing Pooh books as well. Condition: a fine and abolutely beautiful copy. No previous owner s scribbles inside, the leather binding is crsip and clean like on the day of publication. No rubbing to the gilding. Page block edges gilded as called for. The original glassine wrapper is present and without any chips or tears, now of course yellowed as over 90 years have passed. The original box is near fine with no structural damage at all, with a whiff of foxing and toning as to be expected. The best condition on the marekt and extremely rare to find as the vast majority of deluxe copies are the second editions which used the tenth printing paper stock. The letter: Single page autograph letter, signed as A.A.Milne , on stationary with letterhead of 13, Mallord Street, Chelsea, S.W.3. Tel Flaxman 2074. Dated 4 vi 31 Expected center fold. Fine condition. A warm, jocular letter written by Milne to his dear longtime friends, the Seligmans. Both Milne and his wife Daphne would maintain a close rapport with this couple beginning in the early 1920 s: Dear Bobs, Thank you so much for the club. I tried it Friday and though it didn t play quite as well as yours did on that memorable afternoon when I had the pleasure of beating you at Ashdam Forest, I think it will get all right with a little practice. When it did hit the ball, it hit it a very long way, and as soon as it realizes that I m not going to (illegible) any nonsense from it we shall get along all right. So again my many thanks indeed; it was charming of you to send it. Yours ever A.A. Milne. Give my love to your husband and thank him again for his matches. The 18th anniversary of our wedding day! A.A. Milne played a fair amount of golf, in the mid-1920s he mentioned he got his handicap to 9 . In his autobiography published several years later, Milne talks about golf. To-day, I could be happy without a car, I could be happy without a country cottage, but I shouldn t be happy if I couldn t be reckless about golf balls, taxis, the best seats at cricket grounds and theatres, shirts and pullovers, tips, subscriptions, books and wine-lists. While discussing the creative process of writing Milne says, I have spent many mornings at Lords [Cricket Grounds] hoping that inspiration would come, many days on golf courses; I have even gone to sleep in the afternoon, in case inspiration came to take me completely by surprise. In vain. An amazing set. First and Fine. Signed by Author(s). Seller Inventory # ABE-1552662350776

About this Item: Methuen & Co., Ltd 1924-1928, London, 1924. First editions of each work in Milne's wonderful Pooh quartet. Octavo, original cloth, pictorial endpapers, top edge gilt. Winnie the Pooh is signed by A.A. Milne on the title page. When We Were Very Young if a first edition, second issue as usual with page ix numbered. Each are fine in very good dust jackets with some loss and wear to the extremities and light toning. Housed in a custom full morocco clamshell box with a morocco inlay of Winnie the Pooh to the front panel. Illustrated by Ernest Shepard. An exceptional set, most rare and desirable with Winnie the Pooh signed by Milne. "Although Alan Alexander Milne wrote novels, short stories, poetry and many plays for adults, in addition to his work as assistant editor for Punch from 1906 to 1914, it is his writings for children that have captured the hearts of millions of people worldwide and granted Milne everlasting fame" (Silvey, 461). Milne wrote most of these poems at the request of friend and fellow poet Rose Fyleman, who was planning a new children's magazine. "On a rain-blighted holiday in Wales, [Milne] escaped from the crowd of fellow guests to the summerhouse, and for 11 days wrote a set of children's verses, one each day. 'There on the other side of the lawn was a child with whom I had lived for three years [his son, Christopher Robin]. and here within me were unforgettable memories of my own childhood.' He added more verses when he got home, enough for a book, and allowed some to be published in advance in Punch" (Carpenter & Prichard, 351). Shepard, a Punch staff artist at the time, provided delightful line vignettes, resulting in "a wonderful marriage of verse and vision. His delicately precise and fresh drawings had an instant appeal" (DNB). Seller Inventory # 95227

About this Item: Methuen, London, 1928. First editions. Complete set of first editions of the Pooh Books, all in original dust jackets, with WHEN WE WERE VERY YOUNG signed by Milne and Shepard. In 1933 Compton Mackenzie described the publication of the first Pooh Book, WHEN WE WERE VERY YOUNG as marking "an epoch as positively as any children's book has ever marked one. It is not extravagant to surmise that a distant posterity may find in that volume of children's verse a key with which to unlock the present more easily than with any contemporary novel, poem, or play" (quoted in Thwaite). The series is an evocative reflection of English childhood in the 1920s, yet transcends the time and place of its making for each new generation to discover - and fall for. As the first book in the series, WHEN WE WERE VERY YOUNG is the most difficult to find signed, making this an especially desirable set. 4 volumes, 7.5'' x 5'' each. Original blue, green, red and pink cloths. In original color printed dust jackets. Top edges gilt. WHEN WE WERE VERY YOUNG has page ix, not the very rare first state. Signed by Milne and Shepard on title page of WHEN WE WERE VERY YOUNG. Contemporary Methuen ad laid into SIX. Housed in beautiful blue goatskin box with in-laid Pooh design on front board. Books all fine, with only a bit of the typical offsetting in the gutter: Firm hinges, fresh cloth, clean text, no inscriptions. Jackets range fine (WINNIE-THE-POOH) to very good (HOUSE, with some small chips to spine ends not affecting text); WWVY and SIX solidly near fine with only a bit of shallow chipping and touch of toning to spine of SIX: else little soil or sunning. Overall fine in near-fine jackets. Seller Inventory # 39921

About this Item: Methuen, London, 1924. Condition: Fine. First edition. Publisher's blue gilt-stamped cloth, housed in a chemise and morocco-backed slipcase. A Fine copy of the book with the spine gently rolled and slight bubbling at the paste-downs, otherwise in excellent condition (lacking the dust jacket). First issue with no roman numeral "ix" on the contents page and with plain end papers. Inscribed by Milne to his literary agent: "For Curtis Brown in return for all the the trouble he has saved me-- and is going to save me-- and the money he has made for me-- and is going to make for me--IN SHORT in return for the blessed feeling of saying 'Don't bother me. Go to - Brown' this book (which he bought himself--that sort of man) from A.A. Milne." Albert Curtis Brown, an American journalist who founded a press syndication agency in London, became famous for representing some of the most important American and British authors of the post-WWI world. Among them was A. A. Milne, who had already established himself as a successful essayist and playwright. But it was with the present work, When We Were Very Young, that Milne found his true voice and launched what remains a cornerstone children's series. Comprised of poetry written for his young son, When We Were Very Young contains the very first appearance of "the Best Bear in All the World" -- who, two years later, would be known to adults and children by name as Winnie the Pooh. While illustrator Ernest Shepard would work with Milne to bring to life this Bear (and a widening cast of characters including Christopher Robin, a stand-in for Milne's son), it was Brown and his agency who helped transform Winnie the Pooh into an international phenomenon. The Milne estate, to this day, remains under the charge of the Curtis Brown Agency. Fromthe Library of Duncan (and Karol) Cranford. Fine. Seller Inventory # 3974
