Item Description: Harper & Row. New York, 1963. Hardcover. Book Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Poor. 1st Edition. Hardcover with DJ. Blue cloth spine, pictorial boards. White pictorial DJ faded at the edges and with a couple short closed (1" or so) tears. It has protected the book well, though; the book is clean and square. Front cover of DJ has the Caldecott sticker affixed (not printed on the DJ). Inside front DJ flap is price-clipped. Code of 40-80. 1163 present on the bottom of the flap. Title page has the LOC number. Rear DJ flap says "Winner of the 1964 Caldecott Award" at the top and "Best Illustrated Children's Book of 1963" at the bottom. This is not the entire and complete first edition (which makes no mention of the Caldecott Award), but it is a very early printing. After the book won the Caldecott, all the copies still in stores were recalled & new DJ's were printed, mentioning the award. This copy does have the skewed colors associated with the first printing -- just not the right DJ. The book is, however, in quite good condition. Please email for photos or with questions. Item Description: New York City, NY: HarperCollins Publishers/McSweeneys, 2009. Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. Unpaginated. Published in 2009. Rare Spike Jonze collectible set. A pristine copy of "Heads On And We Shoot" and a brand-new copy of the film on Blu-Ray, both signed by Spike Jonze. Landmark pictorial book-length account on subject. One of the best books on film adaptation and film-making ever published. The First Hardcover Edition. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now scarce. Presents Spike Jonze's "Heads On And We Shoot". His ground-breaking film adaptation of Maurice Sendak's beloved classic, "Where The Wild Things Are". The book is presented in three parts, accordion-style: a) "Heads On And We Shoot" describes the actual making of the film, supplemented with drawings, original artwork, reference materials, and photographs from the filming; b) the complete Screenplay by Spike Jonze and Dave Eggers, interspersed with Interviews and film stills; and c) "Post-Production", which consists of special effects that are beautifully reproduced on the page. "The film incorporates the most dynamic elements of voice performance, live-action puppetry, and computer animation into a live-action adventure story that captures the magic of the book, and takes it to a new dimension. In order to preserve the realistic nature of the film, 'The Wild Things' was not created digitally. Instead, Spike Jonze brings these characters to life in the form of physical suits built by the Jim Henson Company. These creatures, operated by a suit performer, interact with the live actor playing Max on set in front of the camera. After principal photography was finished, CGI was used to make the creatures completely life-like and convincing" (Publisher's blurb). An absolute "must-have" title for Spike Jonze, Maurice Sendak, and Dave Eggers collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in metallic-silver pen-marker on the front free endpaper by Spike Jonze. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. It comes with a brand-new copy of the film on Blu-Ray, also very prominently and beautifully signed in metallic-silver pen-marker in front by Jonze. This title is a film classic. As far as we know, this is the only such signed set available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright, pristine beauties. A rare signed set thus. Three of the finest American artist/writers of our time. A fine collectible set. (SEE ALSO DAVE EGGERS' "THE WILD THINGS" TITLE IN OUR CATALOG) ISBN 0061645567. Signed by Author. An excellent example with some rubbing and toning to the boards in a near fine dust jacket. "Wild Things!' When Max's sojourn among them unfolded in kinematic splendor in 1963, adults trembled and children reveled. Reaching back into his own Brooklyn childhood, Sendak created the enduring child-hero Max, who overcomes his fears and achieves catharsis in a colorful fantasy tableau. The book was awarded the 1964 Caldecott Medal by the American Library Association" (NYPL Books of the Century 212). Bookseller Inventory # 17006

Item Description: Harper & Row, 1963. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. MAURICE SENDAK (illustrator). 1st Edition. FIRST STATE of the First Edition, First Printing of WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE with the First Printing, First state dust jacket. All first state points present. Near fine book in a near fine dust jacket. The identifying points for the first state dust jacket include the unique content of the information found only on the First State jacket flaps (no mention of the Caldecott award, and instead includes a three paragraph blurb about Sendak on the rear flap and a three paragraph blurb about the book on the front inner flap). The first state book is equally unique in that the colors of the inks used on the end papers as well as many of the internal pages are different from the later printings. Unpaginated. Please see detailed images (taken both with and without the dust jacket protector). The book has crisp boards in near fine condition. The corners are sharp, and the book has no edgewear. The binding is tight and square. The book is in beautiful condition for this title which if often found with scribbles, writing, ruined spines, alot of edgewear and other issues that revolve around first edition children¿s books. The boards are clean with no fading, and no scribbles. The stunning end papers are in perfect condition with no inscriptions, no owner names, no bookstore stamps, and no bookplates. The internal pages are clean with but a tiny stray faint handling mark to about 2 pages, otherwise the pages are clean with no writing, no stains, no handling marks, no rips, no bent pages, and no foxing. Beautiful clean, crisp, bright copy of a children¿s book in hard to find clean condition! The scarce original first state, first edition dust jacket has benefited from some slight restoration to repair a few small intact tears to jacket, and as such shows in beautiful condition with the usual age toning and light soiling as commonly found with this dust jacket. The dust jacket has strong vibrant colors with no edgewear, no rips, no chips, no rubbing, no stains, no fading, no scribbles and no foxing. The dust jacket is NOT price clipped and has a stated price of $3.50 on the inner front flap, bottom of flap has the requisite code of 40-80, and 1163. The price is not important in the determination of the first state jacket as the first state is exclusively determined by the content of the information found on the inner front and rear flaps. A very handsome example of this title presenting very well with the stunning jacket and clean, interior at a great price for this title! ADDITIONAL IMAGES AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. Please see our Abe store for additional children's rare books and original illustration art. Bookseller Inventory # 000708

Item Description: Harper & Row, 1963. Hardcover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 1st Edition. SIGNED FIRST STATE of the First Edition, First Printing of WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE with the First Printing, First state dust jacket. All first state points present. Near fine book in a First State dust jacket. Please see detailed images. FLAT SIGNED by Maurice Sendak on the title page The book has crisp boards in near fine condition. The internal pages are clean with but a few tiny very very faded dots of foxing to the last and first page, otherwise the pages are very clean with no writing, no stains, no handling marks, no rips, no bent pages, and no foxing. Beautiful clean, crisp, bright copy of a children¿s book in hard to find crisp condition! The scarce original first state, first edition dust jacket has benefited from some slight restoration to repair a few small intact tears to jacket, and as such shows in beautiful condition with the usual age toning and light soiling as commonly found with this dust jacket. Slight wrinkle to the front. A very handsome example of this scarce signed title presenting very well with the stunning jacket and clean interior at a great price for this title! ADDITIONAL IMAGES AVAILABLE UPON REQUEST. Please see our Abe store for other rare children's books, in additional to original artwork by Maurice Sendak. Signed by Author(s). Bookseller Inventory # 000932

Item Description: [New York]: Harper and Row, 1963. Hard Cover. Book Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Included. Sendak, Maurice (illustrator). 1st Edition. Illustrated by the author. First edition, first printing, with the Library of Congress number 63-21253; in a first issue dust jacket, priced $3.50, with no mention of the Caldecott award, with codes 40-80 and 1163, three blurbs each to the front and back panels. Inscribed by Sendak to book designer Janet Anderson on the half-title: "For Janet Anderson / Maurice Sendak / 4/15/82". Publisher's pictorial white boards and gray cloth, illustrated with Sendak's wraparound drawing of a wild thing, his habitat, and Max's boat, lettered in black, pictorial endpapers; original pictorial dust jacket illustrated after the binding. Near fine, with some minor wear from a removed bookplate to the front pastedown, bright boards, clean pages; unclipped dust jacket, with some light toning to the spine and panel edges, a few minor nicks to the spine ends, short closed tear to the top edge of the front panel (not affecting the title lettering), a few faint smudges to the otherwise bright panels. Overall, a very attractive and clean copy, with the Newcomb Hall Bookstore of University of Virginia's autograph slip laid in. Hanrahan A58. The winner of the 1964 Caldecott Medal, Where the Wild Things Are is Maurice Sendak's iconic children's book about a young boy who is sent to bed without supper and imagines himself in a fantasy jungle world where he is the king of the ferocious "wild things." A very personal book, the story is based on Sendak's childhood; the idea of "wild things" came from the Yiddish term "vilde chaya" or "wild animal" that was popular with his mother, the wild things themselves were based on his aunts and uncles, and the experience of being sent to bed without supper for being a "vilde chaya" was one that Sendak knew well. Although the book was initially criticized for its dark undertones, Sendak's keen ability to connect with the emotions and dreams experienced by children worldwide, paired with his exquisite illustrations, make this book a timeless classic.
