DL consignment. Shelved Room C. Don DeLillo was born November 20, 1936 in the Bronx, New York City to an Italian-American family. DeLillo hadn't taken much interest in writing until working as a parking attendant where he read throughout much of his shifts, developing a love of modernist fiction, which alongside jazz and several postwar films became major influences on his writing. His first novel, "Americana" would be released in 1971 after four years of work followed by continual releases of his next seven novels through 1982. "White Noise" would release in 1985 and would become DeLillo's breakout novel, solidifying him as a notable and respected novelist and bringing his works to a much wider audience. "White Noise" has been immensely influential to various authors, including the works of author Richard Powers who wrote an introduction for the 25th anniversary edition. "White Noise" would also be adapted into a film of the same name in 2022 starring Adam Driver and Greta Gerwig which released to mixed, but generally positive reviews. 1388306. Special Collections.

First edition of the authorâs National Book Award-winning novel. Octavo, original half cloth. Presentation copy, boldly inscribed by the author on the title page, "To Joe Don DeLillo." Fine in a fine dust jacket. Jacket design by Neil Stuart. A very sharp example. A brilliant satire of mass culture and numbing effects of technology, White Noise tells the story of Jack Gladney, a teacher of Hitler studies at a liberal arts college in Middle America. Jack and his fourth wife, Babette, bound by their love, fear of death, and four ultramodern offspring, navigate the rocky passages of family life to the background babble of brand-name consumerism. Then a lethal black chemical cloud, unleashed by an industrial accident, floats over their lives, an "airborne toxic event" that is a more urgent and visible version of the white noise engulfing the Gladneysthe radio transmissions, sirens, microwaves, and TV murmurings that constitute the music of American magic and dread. White Noise was awarded the National Book Award. It is the basis for the 2022 film directed by Noah Baumbach starring Adam Driver, Greta Gerwig, Raffey Cassidy, Andrà Benjamin, Alessandro Nivola, Jodie Turner-Smith, and Don Cheadle.
