About this Item: Andre Deutsch, London, 1966. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. First Edition (first printing). 8vo. 190pp. Red cloth lettered and ruled in gold at the spine. Edges quite spotted and with some quite notable uneven browning to the front free endpaper, presumably from where a clipping of some sort was once stored. Just a hint of very light occasional margin spotting. Really quite a crisp and bright copy in the handsome double-spread pictorial dust wrapper designed by Eric Thomas, non-price-clipped (21s net) but with just the merest hint of edgewear to two or three extremities. Faint ghost of a former owner pencilled name all but erased from the head of the front free endpaper. A very nice copy of the author's most famous work, a prequal to 'Jane Eyre', published over twenty-five years after her previous book. Increasingly scarce. Seller Inventory # BC15920

About this Item: Andre Deutsch, London, 1966. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Fine. First Edition. First Impression of Rhys's prequel to Charlotte Brontė's Jane Eyre, reconstructing the life of Bertha Cosway, the madwoman of Thornfield Hall. Small 8vo: 190pp. Publisher's finely woven tangerine cloth, spine stamped in gilt; beautifully illustrated dust jacket by Eric Thomas, priced 21s. A Fine copy (tight, strong binding, probabaly unread; clean pages free from inscription; fresh, crisp jacket), barring few isolated spots of foxing to page edges. A superb copy of Rhys's brief, beautiful masterpiece. Wide Sargasso Sea tells the extended story of Rochester's visit to the West Indies to marry Cosway, a white Creole heiress. "According to a letter Rhys sent to Francis Wyndham [who wrote the book's introduction] in 1958, the previous year it had 'clicked in her head' that this material [narrative sketches under the vague title of 'Creole,' about Rhys's memories of the West Indies] could in fact be turned into a novel about 'the first Mrs. Rochester,' the shadowy West Indian character in Jane Eyre. Rhys wanted the connection with Brontė's novel, she wrote, because it was 'that particular mad Creole I want to write about.' In the same letter she proffers the title 'Wide Sargasso Sea' . . . It took eight more years of writing and rewriting, punctuated by doubts and anxiety, by the death of her husband, Max Hamer, and by two heart attacks, before Jean Rhys's final novel, Wide Sargasso Sea, widely regarded as her finest work, was published in 1966, two months after her 76th birthday." (Literary Encyclopedia) Note: With few exceptions (always noted), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. About this Item: Andre Deutsch, London, 1966. First edition of this "tour de force" (New York Times Book Review). Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Jean Rhys. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of shelfwear. Introduction by Francis Wyndham. Jacket design by Eric Thomas. Rare and desirable signed. Wide Sargasso Sea, a masterpiece of modern fiction, was Jean Rhys's return to the literary center stage. She had a startling early career and was known for her extraordinary prose and haunting women characters. With Wide Sargasso Sea, her last and best-selling novel, she ingeniously brings into light one of fiction's most fascinating characters: the madwoman in the attic from Charlotte Bronte's Jane Eyre. This mesmerizing work introduces us to Antoinette Cosway, a sensual and protected young woman who is sold into marriage to the prideful Mr. Rochester. Rhys portrays Cosway amidst a society so driven by hatred, so skewed in its sexual relations, that it can literally drive a woman out of her mind. Basis for the 1996 John Duigan film bearing the same name and the 2006 film by playwright Stephen Greenhorn, produced by Elwen Rowlands and directed by Brendan Maher. It starred Rebecca Hall as Antoinette Cosway and Rafe Spall as Rochester. Seller Inventory # 45075
