The top edge dust soiled and the cloth just a fraction marked in one or two places. Some quite light spotting to the endpapers. Former owner inscription inked to the front free endpaper and a second pencilled name inked out. A nice bright copy, particularly crisp internally, and housed in the original non-price-clipped dust wrapper, somewhat spotted and rubbed with one two-inch internally repaired tear and a little loss from the spine ends and corner tips. Denys Watkins Pitchford MBE (1905-1990) was born at Lamport, Northamptonshire. His first book was published in 1937; Wild Lone was his second book. Over the next 50 years he wrote some 60 books of his own and illustrated another 35 by authors. A lovely first edition copy of this charming children's work written and illustrated by Denys James Watkins-Pitchford, rebound in a half polished calf binding with cloth covered boards. Denys James Watkins-Pitchford was a renowned illustrator and a children's author who wrote under the pseudonym BB a name based on the size of lead shot he used to shoot geese. Throughout his literary career, he wrote approximately sixty books and illustrated at least another thirty written by other authors. Moreover, he also wrote for newspapers, magazines and even wrote a bi-weekly column in 'The Shooting Times' from the 1930s until his death 1990. However, he was best known as prolific children's author, winning the Carnegie Medal for British children's books in 1942. This story tells the struggle and survival of a motherless fox cub in the English wilds. Collated, complete with thirteen full page plates, and numerous head and tail pieces. Condition: Rebound in a half polished calf binding with cloth covered boards. Externally lovely. Internally firmly bound. Pages very bright and clean throughout.
