Soft cover. Condition: Fine. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. Signed. 158 pages. Published in 1999. Retrospective collection of the artist/photographer's films. The single most important book on the cinematic art and achievement of William Klein. The first appearance of the title in the United States. Published in a small and limited print run as a softcover original only. The First American Edition is now also rare. A brilliant production by William Klein: Oversize-volume format. Pictorial softcovers with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs and film stills selected and sequenced by William Klein. Essay by Claire Clouzot. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper by EBS in Verona, Italy to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents William Klein's "Films". The complete cinematic oeuvre of the visual artist who is much better-known as a ground-breaking photographer. By 1964, Willam Klein had completed his now-legendary series of books on cities ("New York", "Moscow", "Rome", and "Tokyo"), and felt he had said everything he wanted to say through photography. He turned his restless and inexhaustible creative energies to film-making, and spent an extended period that lasted for more than two decades (from 1965 to the 1980's), making quirkily brilliant films that now enjoy a global cult following. It takes a truly courageous and uncompromising artist to abandon one medium, after leaving his indelible mark on it, and move on to another. Just as he permanently and radically changed the way people take photographs, William Klein's films expanded and enriched the cinematic vocabulary with such pioneering films as "Broadway By Light", "Who Are You, Polly Maggoo?" , "Mr. Freedom", "Muhammad Ali The Greatest", "The Little Richard Story", and "The Messiah". One of the greatest film directors of all time praised "Broadway By Light", on Manhattan's magnificent neon-lit signs: "It is truly the very first film that needed to be made in color" (Orson Welles). Since then, many well-known photographers have branched out into film-making. Some of the more recent sensations like Larry Clark, Bruce Weber, David LaChapelle, and Anton Corbijn have either turned to making films in addition to their photographic work or abandoned photography altogether. All of them credit William Klein's pioneering example as their primary inspiration. William Klein eventually returned to photography, and is now firmly established as one of the greatest visual artists of our time. Supplemented with an insightful essay by Claire Clouzot, this is the definitive book on William Klein's film work, whose recognition is long overdue. An absolute "must-have" title for William Klein collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in metallic-silver pen-marker on the title page by William Klein. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. It comes with a brand-new/shrinkwrapped copy of "Delirious Klein" Criterion DVD set. This title is a great film book. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Edition/First Printing (American) still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. A rare signed copy thus. William Klein's "Life Is Good And Good For You In New York" was selected as one of the greatest photography books in "The Photobook". One of the greatest artist/photographers of our time. The first appearance of the title in English and in the United States. Precedes and should not be confused with all other subsequent editions. Published in a small and limited first print run as a hardcover original only. The First Edition is now rare. A brilliant production by William Klein: Oversize-volume format. The book weighs 5 pounds. Glossy pictorial hard boards with titles on the cover and spine, as issued. Photographs by William Klein. Afterword by Martin Harrison. Stunning endpapers. Printed on pristine-white, thick coated stock paper by Amilcare Pizzi in Milan, Italy to the highest standards. Without DJ, as issued. Presents William Klein's "In And Out of Fashion". The truly astonishing range of the photographer's fashion and lifestyle work. Complemented and juxtaposed with his unsurpassable street photography. The creator of a style that has been extremely influential just as it has remained completely original, William Klein's approach to fashion is more subdued, but still retains his trademark "in-your-face" aggressiveness, wit, and panache, in stark contrast to the polished, clean, and Minimalist "look" perfected and favored by the School of the great Alexey Brodovitch and his disciples, most notably Avedon. William Klein began his career as a graphic designer, which is why his books are beautifully and meticulously produced, and more important, it provided the basis for his raw, powerful, and obtrusive photographic style. Every graphic designer wants his work not just to be noticed, but to invade your consciousness and implant itself there (this is why "art directors" of advertising agencies are graphic designers, and Klein himself worked in advertising intermittently). Klein inaugurated a revolution in photography by breaking with the medium's taboos and traditions. He developed a radically new way to take pictures, perfecting his graphic design-based style by incorporating elements of black humor, social criticism, satire, reportage, cinema, literature, and poetry, thereby creating the unique look that has since been so widely copied by other artists, graphic designers, and photographers (without credit being given to its creator) it is now part of our collective photographic vocabulary. There is no modern, "cutting-edge" magazine in the world that does not have an unmistakable trace of Klein's style. The work of such photographers as Max Vadukul, Ellen von Unwerth, Peter Lindbergh, David Sims, and Mario Testino, to name just a few, owes an immense debt to William Klein's ground-breaking oeuvre. An absolute "must-have" title for William Klein collectors. This copy is very prominently and beautifully signed in white pen-marker on the black title page by William Klein. It is signed directly on the page itself, not on a tipped-in page. The signature stands out against the page's predominantly black background. This title is a great photography book. This is one of few such signed copies of the First Hardcover Edition/First Printing (American) still available online and is in especially fine condition: Clean, crisp, and bright. A rare signed copy thus. 91 duotone, 74 color plates. Federico Motta Editore, Milan, 1990. 176 pp. First edition. Small folio. Hardbound. Photo illustrated dust jacket. Numerous full page gravure reproductions. Text in Italian. This book by Klein was only published in Italy. Torino, being the smallest city Klein documented for a monograph, is among the most intimate of his books. It focuses heavily on the city's infatuation with soccer. The end papers are photo illustrated crowd scenes. Anecdotally, we hear that the city of Torino had published the book to celebrate the World Cup matches being held there. They were only distributed in town, and when Italy was knocked out in the semifinals, getting only third place, they were so upset they stopped handing them out and eventually destroyed many of the remaining books. First Edition. First Edition. INSCRIBED by Klein to Ira Lowe on the half-title page: "to Ira, / a little catalog not made, heureusement in USA (see page 7) / All my best / Bill." Ira Lowe was a Washington, DC based lawyer who specialized in the arts and, over the course of a lengthy career, represented some of the most significant artists and writers of the twentieth century, famously (and successfully) arguing in front of the Supreme Court for the concept of "blockage discount" in valuing artists estates. The reference in the inscription is to a image of a summons in New York State Klein received after being sued for defamation of character by Aperture and a second publisher for a million dollars each after he publicly criticized one of their books. The case was still pending at the time the surrounding interview in this book took place. Near Fine without dust jacket as issued. Small bruise to the outer edge of the front board, light rubbing to the extremities. Text in French. Signed.
