About this Item: Methuen & Company Limited. Condition: Good. 312pp; 8pp Methuen publications. Fortieth edition but only the second impression with the classic Ernest H. Shepard illustrations - originally published the year earlier. A good plus, tight clean copy in original publisher's green cloth - gilt embossed to the spine with titles and to the front board with 3 characters from the book. No inscriptions. Some rubbing to the cloth along board edges in a few places with slight loss - most notably to the board corners and to the tail of the spine. The book a little bumped at the head and tail of the spine. Several strips of sellotape and or ghosting to the front paste-down and similarly to the rear paste-down - in neither case not particularly browned heavy or noticeable. Splitting along the rear inner hinge with slight - the rear board remains firmly bound and slight splitting to the front inner hinge. A good plus essentially clean, tight copy. Bound in a contemporary full black morocco, with gilt lettering lines and devices. The original gilt decorated green front board illustrating Mole Ratty and Toad is bound at the rear, and the front panel from the original dustjacket is bound at the front. Maps as front and rear endpapers. Internally nice and clean. Ventnor Knight's Library ticket to front pastedown; ink gift inscription to front free endpaper. Cocked, extremities a little rubbed but still bright and fresh, light scattered foxing, otherwise unmarked. A very good copy in the very good jacket, corners a little chipped, a few edge-splits, somewhat soiled and spotted, but not restored or sunned. Two-tone frontispiece and 19 plates by Wyndham Payne. First Wyndham Payne edition, first impression. The Wind in the Willows was only published with a frontispiece when it first appeared in 1908. Wyndham Payne is the first British illustrator of this work, preceding E. H. Shepard by four years. "Payne's contribution was to place the characters in unmistakably English countryside. Wind in the Willows was first published in 1908 with only a frontispiece for illustration, and Shepard, well-known by then for his illustrations of A. A. Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh series, was asked to provide black and white illustrations for a new edition in 1931, following on from Milne's popular adaptation of the book for stage, Toad of Toad Hall. Shepard visited Grahame at his house in Pangbourne to make sketches, and at their first meeting Grahame said to him, "I love these little people, be kind to them". Shepard's classic illustrations of anthropomorphized animals render this the most popular version of the book even today.
