Spine lettered in gilt. Board edges just a little rubbed but the gilt is still bright. Decorative map endpapers drawn by Shepard and showing all the Characters homes. A very good of this lovely book. About this Item: Methuen, London, 1931. Ernest Shephard (illustrator). 1st Ed. Thus. A beautiful copy of the 38th printing of this classic, the first edition with Ernest Shepard's illustrations. This copy is in near-fine condition, bound in green cloth with the three characters gold-stamped on the front cover. There is a tiny spot on the edge of the fep and its facing page, and a very light discoloration on page 3, Also a miniscule nick to the cloth at the edge of the front board with very light corner wear. Charles Van Sandwyk's illustrations have been compared favourably to Ernest Shepard's and Arthur Rackham's illustrations of Kenneth Grahame's classic work. Van Sandwyk's works hang in the National Library of Canada and his other award-winning books include the Parade to Paradise, Sketches from the Dream Island of Birds and How to See Fairies. Van Sandwyk is a very successful vancouver artist who is known for his whimsical illustrations. Best selling book in Folio Society's history, and the first edition is uncommon.
