About this Item: Penguin Books Ltd, 1976. Condition: Very Good. 1976. New Impression. Paperback. Penguin, 1947, 1st UK edn. slight spotting and one diagonal fold on cover; 224pp. Anderson had a particularly clear and clean vision. He saw the objects and characters of a familiar small town with the eyes of childhood, the ordinary houses and trees and fruit and people with the freshness and brightness of Cezanne. Although the characters in Winesburg, Ohio are the simple, ordinary people of a typical Ohio small town, almost all of them are remarkable in some way or another. Adolph Myers, alias Wing Biddlebaum, in the story " Hands," is an unfortunate school-teacher whose affection for his pupils is misinterpreted by a half-wit, whereupon he is hounded out of town. Dr. Percival is a drunken mystic, who tells George Willard, the young reporter (Anderson's Stephen Daedalus), that "everyone in the world is Christ." Jesse Bentley, the old farmer, thinks he is a Man of God. Alice Hindman, a clerk in the dry-goods store, runs naked in the rain. And Enoch Robinson, in " Loneliness," carries on conversation with the people of his imagination. Winesburg, Ohio caused a furore in 1919 when it appeared. It was something entirely new and peculiarly American in the fiction of the period. The New Republic reviewed it : "As a challenge to the snappy short story form, with its planned proportions of flippant philosophy, epigrammatic conversation and sex danger, nothing better has come out of America than Winesburg, Ohio." And H. W. Boynton said in The Bookman : " I do not know where in prose a tenser moral action is concentrated than in the dozen pages of 'The Strength of God.' " If today Anderson's impact is no longer so immediately felt, it is well to remember the enormous influence he has had on American fiction. What is known as the Hemingway School stems directly from him, and Saroyan has said " we are all his collaborators." 7x4?in. . . . . Seller Inventory # KEB0002121
