It is the child's book of the season that seems certain to stay" (Thwaite, p. 317). John R. Payne, "Four Children's Books by A. A. About this Item: Methuen and Co, London, 1926. First edition of this children's classic. Octavo, gilt titles to the spine, elaborately decorated in gilt, top edge gilt, cartographic endpapers and line drawings by Ernest H. Shepard. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of shelfwear. An exceptional example. "Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh has been considered a classic of children's literature almost since its publication" (Cooper & Cooper). In 1925, A.A. Milne purchased "a Sussex farmhouse for use as a weekend and holiday alternative to the family's London home. [that would] provide the setting for the stories he now started to write about [his son] Christopher's toys. Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner [its companion volume, published 1928] are, on their own terms, more successful as works written for children than anything else produced during children's literature's Golden Age" (Carpenter). "Ernest H. Shepard's illustrations, modeled after the actual toys, show character and movement in simple line vignettes, which add so much to the books that most people consider them to be inseparable from the texts" (Silvey). About this Item: London: Methuen & Co. Ltd, 1929, 1929. Octavo. Original pink cloth, titles to spine and pictorial design to front cover gilt, top edge gilt. With the dust jacket. Housed in a black quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Spine bumped, partial tanning to half title and colophon, dust jacket nicked and chipped to corners. Illustrated throughout by E. H. Shepard. Third edition. With an original pen and ink drawing on the title page by Shepard of Winnie-the-Pooh in full traditional Russian costume including a fur hat and playing a balalaika, signed beneath the image. Rare thus. Milne began planning his final Pooh book in 1927. Three years of intense publicity were taking their toll on the family, and Milne longed to return full-time to adult literature, telling his brother that "after one more Pooh book I must think of something else. In fact, it's time I tried a novel" (Thwaite p. 328). Christopher Robin was growing up, soon to leave for boarding school, and The House at Pooh Corner would be a farewell. But first there was an introduction to be made. Milne had bought his son a stuffed tiger, "Tigger", and told Shepard that he was longing to see the illustrations for this new character, who would become one of the author's most popular creations. Published on 11 October 1928, The House at Pooh Corner was received by critics with a delight tinged by sadness. "The Times Literary Supplement congratulated Milne on avoiding 'the temptation to repeat his successful formula mechanically', though it was 'sad to see the stories end'" (Thwaite p. 336).
