About this Item: Methuen & Co., Ltd 1924-1928, London, 1924. First and early editions of each work in Milne's wonderful Pooh quartet. Octavo, four volumes, original cloth decorated in gilt. First edition of The House at Pooh Corner in the original dust jacket and early printings of each other volume. With When We Were Very Young and The House At Pooh Corner in the original dust jackets. Near fine in very good to near fine dust jackets. "Although Alan Alexander Milne wrote novels, short stories, poetry and many plays for adults, in addition to his work as assistant editor for Punch from 1906 to 1914, it is his writings for children that have captured the hearts of millions of people worldwide and granted Milne everlasting fame" (Silvey, 461). Milne wrote most of these poems at the request of friend and fellow poet Rose Fyleman, who was planning a new children's magazine. "On a rain-blighted holiday in Wales, [Milne] escaped from the crowd of fellow guests to the summerhouse, and for 11 days wrote a set of children's verses, one each day. 'There on the other side of the lawn was a child with whom I had lived for three years [his son, Christopher Robin]. and here within me were unforgettable memories of my own childhood.' He added more verses when he got home, enough for a book, and allowed some to be published in advance in Punch" (Carpenter & Prichard, 351). Shepard, a Punch staff artist at the time, provided delightful line vignettes, resulting in "a wonderful marriage of verse and vision. His delicately precise and fresh drawings had an instant appeal" (DNB). Seller Inventory # 108023

About this Item: Chatto and Windus, 1929. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. A lovely presentation copy of Four Plays dedicated to Mr AR Whatmore. Includes a very personal extemporary poem, written as a thank you to AR who played William Bendish in Milne's play 'Sarah Simple' at the Garrick theatre. The B/W photo shows AR Whatmore with Leonora Corbett as Sarah. The inscription reads: For A.R. Whatmore from A.A. Milne - May 4th - July 28th 1931 - Thank you - Some men like Dickens more than Scott / and some like Walter Scott more / but when it comes to acting, what / could show more wit than Whatmore - [Extemporary poem. And of course he does charming water-colours too]. A. R. Whatmore (1889 1960) was a British actor, playwright and producer of plays. During the 1930s he directed or acted in numerous plays in the West End. He appeared in the films Charley's Aunt (1938) and Rake's Progress (1939). His own company the Whatmore Players, ran successfully until the late 1960s with a certain Mollie Sugden of 'Are You Being Served' fame, being among their number. Signed by Author(s). About this Item: Methuen, 1926. Hardcover. Condition: Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine. 1st Edition. Alan Alexander Milne (1926) Winnie-the-Pooh , UK first deluxe edition, first printing, published by Methuen. Signed by illustrator Ernest H. Shepard on the title page. In addition, a handwritten and signed letter by A.A. Milne anticipating the birth of Christoper Robin, the protagonist of the seminal Winnie-the-Pooh series. The condition of the book is absolutely fine, still in its original card board box and with the original glassine dust jacket. The print run was 3,000 copies divided into three colours of the leather binding: red, green, and blue. This is the red leather variant. One of 1,000 copies of which perhaps a handful exist in this beautiful condition and signed by the iconic illustrator Ernest Shepard! Condition of the book: a fine book with no issues wahtsoever. Silk ribbon marker present, all page block edges gilded. No rubbing to the leather biding. Spine like new with the gilding all vibrant and not rubbed out. The book has not been handled and has sat in its box for decades. The original box has usual signs of ageing, i.e. discolouration and a few ageing spots. The best example of this book we have ever encountered. The letter: Single page ALS, 4.5″ x 6″, on 11 Mallord Street, Chelsea letterhead. Dated 15.iv.20 and signed by A.A. Milne in full signature as A.A. Milne . Center fold, else near fine. An incredible letter marking the first whisper of the catalyst for Milne s Winnie The Pooh series. Although Milne would not know it at the time, the birth of his son Christopher Robin in August of 1920 which would propel his imagination into the Hundred Acre Woods and the adventures of the honey loving bear with no brain, Winnie The Pooh. The letter offered here, dated April 15, 1920, references Daff (A.A. Milne s wife) and her pregnancy with Christopher Robin and is perhaps the earliest known reference to the protagonist of the most endeared children s stories of all time. Milne named the character Winnie the Pooh after the teddy bear owned by his son, Christopher Milne, who originally called his stuffed bear Edward, but later named his toy bear after Winnie, a Canadian black bear he often saw at the London Zoo. His letter, written to Vincent Seligman, a person to whom Milne would develop a close friendship spanning over 30 years is shown in full below. At the time, Milne s wife would have been about 5 months pregnant: 15.iv.20 Dear Mr. Seligman, I have been away, and unfortunately they never send me letters from Many thanks for your kind invitation; I am sorry that my wife cannot come she is not very well just now but I should very much like to come myself if I may. What about Tuesday? I hope that is all right. Again many thanks, Yours A.A. Milne An absolute classic and landmark work of children literature. First and Fine. Signed by Author(s). About this Item: Methuen and Co, London, 1926. Signed limited first edition of this classic work, one of 350 copies of the large paper edition. Octavo, original half cloth, folding map at rear. lllustrated by Ernest H. Shepard. Signed by both A.A. Milne and Ernest H. Shepard. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of rubbing. "Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh has been considered a classic of children's literature almost since its publication" (Cooper & Cooper). In 1925, A.A. Milne purchased "a Sussex farmhouse for use as a weekend and holiday alternative to the family's London home. [that would] provide the setting for the stories he now started to write about [his son] Christopher's toys. Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner [its companion volume, published 1928] are, on their own terms, more successful as works written for children than anything else produced during children's literature's Golden Age" (Carpenter). "Ernest H. Shepard's illustrations, modeled after the actual toys, show character and movement in simple line vignettes, which add so much to the books that most people consider them to be inseparable from the texts" (Silvey).
