First edition: Shakespeare scholar and writer, Mary Cowden Clarke (1809-1898) was educated at home, though it was frequented by artists and poets. Mary Lamb taught her Latin. Early in her career, Clarke collaborated with fellow writers Mary Howitt and Anne Maria Hall. Clarke and her husband's literary circle included John Keats, Leigh Hunt, and Charles and Mary Lamb. - Feminist Companion p. 213. Seventeen biographies include Cleopatra, Joan D'Arc, Lady Jane Grey, Pocahontas, and Florence Nightingale. CBEL Vol. 4, 2221. Sabin 13436. NAIP #37413. DNB Vol. 10, pp. 418-419. Contemporary full crushed morocco, sides with highly-embellished gilt frames, spine with gilt title and gilt-decorated compartments. Gilt-embellished turn-ins. All edges gilt.
