About this Item: The C. V. Mosby Company, St. Louis, 1937. Cloth. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: None. Photographs (illustrator). First American Edition. 3 volumes, small 4tos (10" x 7 1/2"), green original publisher's cloth with gilt stamping on spine and cover (faded), profusely illustrated with more than 1,000 B&W photographs of native peoples and anatomical studies plus seven color plates, Vol. I: xiii + 655pp., Vol. II: xii + 820pp, Vol. III: viii + 543pp., or 2,018 numbered principal pages overall. This is a nearly fine set, which lacks only the original cardboard slipcases. It was originally published in 1884-1884 in two volumes without illustrations. The First English translation appeared in 1935 and was expandeded. After the death of Dr. Ploss, his work was continued by Dr. Max Bartels; then after he died, Theodore Reitzenstein concluded and edited their enormous and important study. This is the definitive American edition of the classic German--then English--anthropological study of "Woman." A vast amount of data concerning every aspect of woman has been here collected--especially that relating to female physiology, anthropology, psychology, and reproductive systems. In this exhaustive work, other aspects of women have also been extensively discussed and often illustrated--mainly with B&W photos of native peoples. For example, there are considerable discussions of matters such as sexuality, female circumcision, "Hottentot aprons" or elongated labia, steapygia or fatty buttocks, virginity, prostitution (secular and sacred), initiation rites, breasts, and other gynecological matters. Bookplates of Dr. Martin J. O'Brien on front pastedown of each volume. Previous owner's name, etc., on title page of vol. I. Seller Inventory # 1547
