Deborah Frances Tannen (born June 7, 1945) is an American academic and professor of linguistics at Georgetown University in Washington, D.C. She has been a McGraw Distinguished Lecturer at Princeton University and was a fellow at the Center for Advanced Study in the Behavioral Sciences following a term in residence at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, NJ. Tannen is the author of twelve books, including That's Not What I Meant! and You Just Don't Understand, the latter of which spent four years on the New York Times Best Sellers List, including eight consecutive months at number one. She is also a frequent contributor to The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Atlantic, and TIME magazine, among other publications. This book will have a dramatic impact on those who are struggling with co-workers, jobs, and companies. Derived from a Kirkus review: Tannen sticks close to the main idea she popularized almost a decade ago in That's Not What I Meant. Men and women have different conversational styles that are equally valid (though unequally valued). Here, she describes women's disadvantages in the workplace: They are paid less than men for the same work and face sexism, a glass ceiling, and sexual harassment. Tannen considers the difference in male and female conversational style as a primary cause. Women are likely to have an indirect manner, to apologize more, and to offer softer criticism; they're problem preventers instead of heroic crisis solvers; they generally strive for the appearance of equality with, not superiority to, their co-workers. Tannen concludes that women should go with their own approach, but they should also try to be assertive and worry less about being liked than about being competent. She acknowledges that women who act assertive may bring unpleasant consequences on themselves. First Edition [Stated], First Printing [Stated].
