About this Item: George M. Hill, 1900. Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Very Scarce Classic in First Edition/First Printing/First State Text AND First State Illustatrations! The ONLY copy I have had in 30 years. All yrcyusl points are in their earliest state: publishers advertisements on page 2 enclosed in a box, verso of tp is blank, line 1 of page 14 reads "low wail on"; fourth line from the bottom of page 81 reads "pieces"; the last line on pages 100 and 186 both have perfect type (indicating this among the earliest copies released); line 1 of page 227 reads "While Tin Woodman"; the colophon on the rear fixed endpaper is typeset in eleven lines and is boxed. The plates are ALL the earliest form, plate opposite p. 34 with two blue spots on the moon and page 92 having red shading on the horizon. The binding is the second state with publisher's name stamped in red with plain type unserifed type and the "o" inside the "c". More attractive than usually encountered and has probably been professionally recased. Brief inscription on FFEP. The text block is UNUSUALLY CLEAN AND TIGHT. I found NO dog eared pages and pages very sharp and attractive. All 24 illustration are very attractive and do NOT have wear. The book is housed in Custom Morocco drop box. A Masterpiece in superior condition!. Seller Inventory # ABE-1575832078345

Baum worked in many trades before he wrote The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, including publisher, poultry breeder, door-to-door salesman and newspaper editor. "Among the five Baum titles published in 1900, preeminent even then was The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The New York Times found it 'bright and joyous' and omnisciently offered, 'It will indeed be strange if there be a normal child who will not enjoy the story.' The first edition was a picturesque novelty with its 24 color plates and many line drawings; Denslow's conceptions of the characters and landscapes contributed immeasurably to the book's popularity" (Fricke, 22). Baum "set out to change children's books and made a lasting contribution to American literature The Wizard of Oz has entered American folklore. It reflected and has altered the American character" (Hearn, xiii). "Those who read the Oz books are often made what they were not imaginative, tolerant, alert to wonders, life" (Gore Vidal).
