First Edition
Condition: Near Fine. First Edition. First edition, first state of plates and text. (Bienvenue pp. 4-5.) Bound in publisher's full green cloth, boards and spine decoratively stamped in green and red; "B" binding with publisher's name in red at foot, full "O" in as last letter. This is the first binding state for trade edition copies (an earlier state was for pre-publication copies only). 261, [1, blank] pages. Illustrated, with twenty-four plates (including title-page) inserted throughout. A Near Fine copy with slightly darkened spine and mottled cloth, very subtle repairs to cloth at corners and spine ends, edges a little rubbed, inner hinges and a few gutters starting, contemporary gift inscription on front free endpaper, mild toning and occasional thumbing to contents else unusually clean. Housed in a custom clamshell case. The rare, sought-after first edition of the classic children's book that inspired a long-running series and beloved 1939 film.
Condition: Fine. Binding state "C.". First edition, second state, of the classic American fairy tale, a remarkably beautiful copy. Although it was only one of four books Baum published in 1900, THE WIZARD OF OZ was his most ambitious as a publication: he and illustrator W.W. Denslow envisioned an elaborate production of color-printed plates to reflect the role that color plays in the story. The expense turned publishers away until Baum and Denslow took the gamble to pay for the printing costs themselves. Their instinct was right: the book quickly became the fastest selling children's book in the United States, and was soon turned into a sensation at the theater. Denslow and Baum would soon part acrimoniously over the share of the profits (Denslow purchased, no joke, an island from his); the rest of the Oz books in Baum's lifetime were illustrated by John R. Neill. Baum has a complicated legacy: he was also a newspaperman whose opinions on Native American rights were especially pernicious. The Oz books offered a dream world for the children of Manifest Destiny, emigrating across the West. Yet over the years Dorothy's journey with her motley friends has proven fertile soil for a variety of new interpretations, including THE WIZ (1978) and WICKED (1995), demonstrating its power as a modern mythos. The original story may surprise readers, with silver shoes instead of ruby slippers, and an Emerald City that is green only because the visitors must wear colored goggles. This is a remarkable, beautiful, clean copy of the first edition. 8.25'' x 6''. Original full green cloth stamped in red and green, "Geo. M. Hill Co." stamped in red serif typeface on spine, "o" within the "C." Illustrated pastedowns in black and grey (front) and black and red (rear). With no box around ads on page 2, 1st line on page 14 reads "low wail of", p.81 fourth line from bottom spells "pieces" correctly, p.[227] 1st line reads "While the Woodman", colophon in 13 lines with no box, verso title page has copyright, imperfect type on pages 100, 186, color plates perfect on p. 34 and 92. 216, [1] pages. Housed in custom archival box.

Condition: Very Good. Denslow, W. W. (illustrator). First Edition. First edition. Illustrated by W. W. Denslow. Original publisher's pale green pictorial cloth stamped in green and red with The Cowardly Lion to upper cover, lower cover with Dorothy, Tin Woodman, and The Scarecrow. Binding state "B" with publisher's imprint in red un-serifed type at foot of spine (copies of binding "A" with publisher's imprint to spine in green are extremely scarce and generally considered to be pre-publication copies for friends of the author and publisher.) Text and illustrations in the first state, except for two points in the second (corrected) state. Containing the first issue points as follows: page 2 with a box around ads, verso of title page is blank with copyright printed to verso of Introduction, 1st line of page 14 reads "low wail on", 4th line from the bottom of page 81 spells "peices" incorrectly, 1st line of page 227 reads "While Tin Woodman", colophon with box around 11 lines of text, page 100 with perfect type, plate facing page 34 has two dark blue blots to the face of the moon; containing these two later points as follows: page 186 with broken type, plate facing page 92 without pink shading at the horizon. A very good copy with inner hinges repaired, head and tail of spine reinforced with cloth neatly relaid over repairs, a few light spots to cloth, spine lightly toned, binding generally clean and unworn, pictorial covers very bright, former owner's name dated 1901 to front free endpaper, pages clean. Hanff & Greene I. 1-2, binding B. Bienvenue p.4. Housed in a customer quarter-leather folding box. Overall, the earliest obtainable binding for this classic of children's literature, with almost all of the first state points of the text and illustrations. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz, subsequently published under the shortened title The Wizard of Oz, is the first of Baum's books to feature the fictional Land of Oz. Inspired by the Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen, Baum created the first truly American fairy tale, with references to American physical and social landscapes. The story features a young female protagonist, Dorothy Gale, and tells of her adventures in the colorful world of Oz after being transported there from her Kansas home by a tornado. The novel is illustrated by William Wallace Denslow, a book designer and political cartoonist who had previously illustrated Baum's earlier works. The author and illustrator later disagreed about whose contribution garnered the book's commercial success and therefore deserved more of its royalties. As a result of this conflict, John R. Neill illustrated the thirteen Oz books Baum subsequently published.
