About this Item: J. & B. Williams, Exeter (NH), 1835. Orig Full Leather w/ Gilt. Condition: Very Good. This 242 page small but profound work, an increasingly well respected and applauded historic offering is proudly presented in the publishers original leather binding. Certainly, the pages are a bit foxed after all these years but the pages are all here and aren't even nicked. The green leather binding is scratched just a bit on the covers and the front hinge is a bit cracked, but overall everything is remarkably straight and tight. Copies of this work were published around the English speaking world and beyond following Frankln's death. The Williams firm was established in Exeter, N.H. in 1818. Exeter, a center of learning in northern New England and home of the Phillips Exeter Academy, had had a printer since 1774. Take hold of this book and you feel as if you have become a part of history itself. But enough said of the telluric parameters of select Hirschfeld Galleries' offerings which take on a life of their own and speak so very loudly for themselves. Read to learn and enjoy; go forth to share and enjoin. Size: 24mo - over 5" - 5" tall. Harcover. Seller Inventory # 005870

About this Item: J Lyon, Fairhaven, VT, 1798. Hardcover. Condition: Poor. No Jacket. Feps and Title Page missing but previously id'd by others who sourced Paul L Ford Biblio. Confirmed by finding a single on-line libr site w/ this printing by ref'g page counts and the misnumbering of pg 67 as pg 43 (libr site also indicated several alt titles used for this prtg). Poor, tight and square, full-leather binding (measuring just under 6-1/2" in height) and a raised band spine w/ label in gilt, all heavily worn. Missing feps incl'g Title Page, text block pages brittle, browned, soiled and foxed w/ rough edges, tears and chips missing. Single-column page format, printed on both sides and using long"s", w/ extended title headers across adjoining pages along w/ ltrs "A thru X" sporadically placed in footer. A hard to find printing presented in an unusual sequence, in particular: Preface by Richard Price (pgs iii-v); Life of Dr Benjamin Franklin (pgs 1-160, w/ continuation by Stueber being pgs 121-160); Essays (pgs 1-254); and, Contents (2 pgs, unnumbered). Fr paste-down incl's handwritten note by G(urdon) Grovenor dated 1899, a survivor of Quantrill's raid in Lawrence, KS whose house was burned to the ground and who would have been killed if the border ruffian's pistol had not misfired, indicating the book belonged to his father, whose name is written on bk paste-down. Both were descendants of John Grovenor, who emigrated to the colonies in 1680, settling in Roxbury, MA. While trying to confirm the prior identification of this book, I was amazed by the insights gained reading an early edition of a founding father's perceptions in his own words. Insights I never acquired reading subsequent works that, although perhaps historically accurate, failed to convey the same wit, wisdom and honesty presented in the original. .Biblio ref's, Paul L Ford, Sabin 25602. Memoirs of the Life and Writings of: Benjamin Franklin (Autobiography),

About this Item: London, Printed for Henry Colburn, British and Foreign Public Library, Conduit Street., 1818. Hardcover. Condition: Fair. No Jacket. 1st Edition. This early 20th century decorative leather book comprises the Memoirs of the Life of Benjamin Franklin, Part I.* Title: Memoirs of the Life and Writings of Benjamin Franklin, LL.D., F.R.S. &c., Minister Plenipotentiary from the United States of America, at the court of France, and for the Treaty of Peace and Independence with Great Britain, &c. &c. Written by Himself to a Late Period, and continued to the Time of His Death, by His Grandson; William Temple Franklin. Now First Published from the Original MSS. Comprising the Private Correspondence and Public Negotiations of Dr. Franklin, and a Selection From His Political, Philosophical, and Miscellaneous Works. Author: Benjamin Franklin (Autobiography), William Temple Franklin (Late Period Author) Publisher: London, Printed for Henry Colburn, British and Foreign Public Library, Conduit Street. Edition: First Edition, Published 1818. Printed by A.J. Valpy, Tooke's Court, Chancery Lane. Binding/description: Full brown period leather hardcover, gilt decorated spine with 5 raised bands, salmon/blue marble endpapers and leaf edges, frontispiece portrait of author opposite title page. *Volume I (only) of a (3) volume set, includes Memoirs of the Life of Benjamin Franklin, Part I. Note: The "Memoirs" were begun by Franklin in 1771 and continued until the period of the Revolution. An interval of 13 years interrupted the continuity, to be resumed while Franklin resided at Paris, and concluded upon his return to the States. Franklin's own writing carries the life to his fifty-first year; the notes of his grandson, Temple Franklin, carries the account to his grandfather's death. Temple Franklin procrastinated in editing and publication. In March 1791, a French edition of the work came out - translator unknown - a German and Swedish edition appeared, the French was translated into English, American editions followed - and it was not until 1817 that Temple Franklin issued his edition of Benjamin Franklin's autobiography and papers. This was, of course, the most direct and authentic Franklin chronicle, and has remained, as source material in regard to the great statesman, paramount. This book is a rare first, and only, quarto edition of the work. Dimensions: 1.5W 8.75D 11H inches. Condition Notes: Fair; detached front board, worn and spotted covers, extremities worn , personal ex-libris label pasted to front endpaper, typed note page adhered to front free endpaper, strong square spine, end papers lightly foxed, clean light age-toned interior pages. A nice copy. Seller Inventory # 002462

About this Item: Wm. W. Woodward, Philadelphia, 1801. Early American edition of the "unofficial" but extremely popular Life, re-translated into English from the French publication and released despite William Temple Franklin's attempts to suppress any version other than his own. This example comprises two volumes in one, opening with an engraved portrait of Franklin signed by Tanner and featuring an addition "not in any other Edition," according to the title-page: "An Examination, before the British House of Lords, respecting the Stamp-Act." At the back are a six-page list of subscribers and four pages of advertisements for Woodward publications. 12mo (16.7 cm, 6.6"). Frontis., 321, [11] pp. Sabin 25602; Shaw & Shoemaker 515. On Temple Franklin and early editions, see: Green & Stallybrass, Franklin,151?60. Contemporary treed sheep, spine with gilt-stamped leather title-label; spine extremities a little chipped, front cover a little sprung, hinges (inside) reinforced. Frontispiece and title-page tattered and now mounted, with outer margin of first preface page repaired; a number of corners bumped or dog-eared, with a few in one section at some point delicately rodent(?)-nibbled. Subscribers' list trimmed closely, affecting two names only; pages age-toned with intermittent foxing. In fact, though not "excellent," quite "satisfactory.". Seller Inventory # 25357

About this Item: Samuel Campbell, New York, 1794. Leather. Condition: Fine. Condition: FINE. [TWO VOLUMES IN ONE: 206 & 139] Full leather volume with rich patina, normal corner bumps, title faded on spine but letters clear. Book is as tight as new. Some small clean page tears here and there; only serious flaw is the part of page 48 in Volume I is missing. Browning and foxing throughout, but easily readable. Prev/owner's markings on first endpaper and title page. This volume contains Ben Franklin's writings on his own life, as well as extracts from his Will, in which he bequeaths money to the free schools of Boston where he was first taught as a child. A delightful surprise deep in the text between two pages is well-dried four-leaf clover, left by an earlier reader. The book includes the epitaph Dr. Franklin wrote for his tombstone: "Here lies the body of Benjamin Franklin, Printer, (Like The Cover On An Old Book, Its Contents Torn Out And Stript of Its Lettering And Gilding) Lies Here Food For The Worms; Yet The Work Itself Shall Not Be Lost, For It Will (As He Believed) Appear Once More, In A New And Beautiful Edition, Corrected And Ammended By The Author." Book is a splendid addition to any library of history or biography. Seller Inventory # H1169
