NOTE the few neat ex-library markings only-- number on spine, raised blind-stamp on title page, and "discard" on reverse of title page. A good-looking sturdy book-- signed by author H G Wells, on the page where the imited edition information is printed and #121 is written in by Wells and he has signed. NOTE-- this is volume l only of the set-- and it is only in volume l of each set that is signed--ever. No set is signed in every volume-- only each first volume. Scarce . Signed by Author. About this Item: Charles Scribner's Sons, New York, 1924. SIGNED by H.G. Wells in Volume 1. 27 (of 28) volumes, lacking Volume 2. 8vo. Various paginations. Half-titles, photogravure frontispiece in each volume with tissue guards. Introduction; preface in each volume. Three quarter blue morocco with gilt ruling, decoration & lettering; TEG; marbled endpapers (different endpaper in Volume 12). Small owner bookplate in each volume (except Volume 12); remnant of bookplate removal in Volume 1; small circular white spot on front cover of Volume 1; small scrape to front cover of Volume 4; else a uniformly near fine set, albeit lacking one volume. The best and most desirable edition of Wells's works, with his own revisions to the texts. Well's most notable science fiction works include The Time Machine, The Island of Doctor Moreau, The Invisible Man, The War of the Worlds and the military science fiction The War in the Air. Wells was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature four times. First Collected Edition, Limited to 1050 copies, this being one of the 50 sets for Presentation (Volume 12 is from numbered set 360) as indicated on the limitation page with the handwritten statement "This is one of the fifty sets for presentation".
