About this Item: Jacob Tonson, 1714. Hardcover. Condition: Good. 12mo. Vols 2-8, lacking only vol 1. This is a made-up part set. Vols 2 & 3 are from one set, vols 4, 5 & 7 from another set, and vols 6 & 8 from a third set. The set was issued in both 8 and 9 volume editions, a ninth volume of poems being added to later sets. This is the 8 volume edition, the last book having 'End of the Eighth and Last Volume' on the final page, followed by the index. Collated complete. All books have a volume title and contents page, plus a title page and frontis for each play. Condition: worn contemporary calf, some boards loose. The books could do with rebinding. Contents are generally quite crisp and clean, much better than is usually found in early editions of Shakespeare. Vol 4 has small stains at fore-edge at end; vol 5 has small ink smudges on title, and red ink mark affecting bottom tips of about 40 pages; vol 6 has small piece torn from bottom corners of A4 and A5, not affecting text; vol 7 has light stain at head of pages throughout; vol 8 has a little light staining affecting some early pages. ***This is an extremely attractive edition of Shakespeare with woodcut head and tail pieces at the beginning and end of each play, as well as a cut to the title pages and copperplate frontispieces. It is also by some way the scarcest 18thC edition of Shakespeare's works, much scarcer than the 1709 first 8vo edition. We would be interested in purchasing a copy of vol 1. 7 vols of 8. About this Item: Bickers and Son 1880-81, London, 1880. Leather. Condition: Fine. Various (illustrator). A fine set of the complete works of William Shakespeare. In beautiful straight grained morocco bindings by Bickers and Son, the publisher of this work. The fourth edition. Illustrated with frontispieces to the first four volumes. Collated, complete. To volume I there is the life of Shakespeare, Shakespeare's will as well as some commendatory verses and early editions. Volume X is a very useful glossary to Shakespearean language and references where they are used in the previous volumes. It was the most exhaustive glossary to exist at its time of publication. The Alexander Dyce edition of Shakespeare's works. Dyce was a Scottish dramatic editor and literary historian. He issued annotations of many of Shakespeare's contemporaries, somewhat rescuing from the neglect by eighteenth century scholars. His Shakespeare edition was originally published in 1857. Dyce's wide reading in Elizabethan literature enabled him to explain much about Shakespeare and the Elizabethan stage which was formerly obscure and unknown. He was distinguished for his judgement and erudition. All ten volumes of this collection are overflowing with useful footnotes by Dyce. In uniform straight grained morocco bindings with gilt stamping to spines. Binding signed by Bickers and Son, with stamp to verso of front endpaper. Externally, excellent with minor shelfwear to the extremities and joints. Just a few marks to front board of volumes VII and IX. Some offsetting from frontispieces to first four volumes. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are very bright with instances of light scattered spots throughout, heavier to first and last few pages. Fine. book. Seller Inventory # SET57-H-2

About this Item: J F Dove, London, 1830. Leather. Condition: Near Fine. None (illustrator). A handsomely bound complete set of Shakespeare's plays, with a life of the author prefacing the first volume, and with numerous plates of illustrations. A remarkably well-preserved set from the first half of the 19th century. Each play is preceded by an engraved frontispiece, showing one of the dramatic scenes. Harness was a cleric and man of letters, who was friends with Lord Byron at Harrow. In his preface he protests that editing a set of Shakespeare was a proper thing for him to do, for he had no pastoral duties at the time and needed the money. For his biography of Shakespeare he drew principally upon the accounts of Rowe, Johnson, Malone, and formed them into a 'connected narrative'. Also included are Rowe's preface, Pope's preface, and Dr Johnson's preface. The plays are arranged in the order they were supposed to have been written. Collated: complete. In full morocco bindings with gilt borders and gilt detailing and titles to the spines. Externally excellent, with only very light shelf wear. With personal bookplates to each of the front pastedowns. Internally, generally clean and bright, apart from the first hundred pages of volume I, which are spotted and foxed. The plates are for the most part foxed, and have offsetting which stops the set from being fine though it is normal for this set. Firmly bound. Near Fine. book. Seller Inventory # EXP2-F-1

About this Item: Macmillan 1891-3, London, 1891. Leather. Condition: Very Good. None (illustrator). The second edition of the well regarded 'Wright' edition of Shakespeare. 1891 (Vols I - IV) 1892 (Vols V - VIII) 1893 (Vol IX). Finely bound volumes in half leather with gilt decoration to the spines, marble paper pastedowns and marbled foredge. William Aldis Wright (1831 - 1914), was an English writer and editor. This is the second and best edition of the very well regarded 'Wright' Shakespeare. "The Works of William Shakespeare (1863-6), edited by William George Clark, with at first W. Aldis Wright and later John Glover as collaborators, was published in nine volumes by Macmillan, but printed at the University Press, so that it became known as the Cambridge Shakespeare. This important edition was based on a "thorough collation of the four Folios and of all the Quarto editions of the separate plays, and of subsequent editions and commentaries" (preface), so that in textual matters it constitutes a virtual variorum. Prefaces provide accounts of the early textual history of each of the works, and the volumes include the texts of first quartos of Hamlet and Romeo and Juliet, as well as the quartos relating to Henry V, The First Part of the Contention (2 Henry VI), and Richard Duke of York (3 Henry VI). Clark and Wright used the Cambridge edition as the basis for the influential one-volume Globe Shakespeare. Both the Cambridge and the Globe editions were revised in 1891" (The Oxford Companion to Shakespeare) He was educated at Trinity College, Cambridge, and in 1888 became vice-master of the college. He was one of the editors of the Journal of Philology from its foundation in 1868, and was secretary to the Old Testament revision company from 1870 to 1885. He edited the plays of Shakespeare published in the "Clarendon Press" series (1868â "97), also with W. G. Clark the "Cambridge" Shakespeare (1863-1866; 2nd ed. 1891-1893) and the "Globe" edition (1864). He published a facsimile of the Milton manuscript in the Trinity College library (1899), and edited Milton's poems with critical notes (1903). He was the intimate friend and literary executor of Edward FitzGerald, whose Letters and Literary Remains he edited in 1889. This was followed by the Letters of Edward FitzGerald to Fanny Kemble (1895), his Miscellanies (1900), More Letters of Edward FitzGerald (1901), and The Works of Edward FitzGerald (7 vols., 1903). He edited the metrical chronicle of Robert of Gloucester (1887), Generydes (1878) for the Early English Text Society, and other texts. Finely bound volumes in half leather with gilt decoration to the spines, marble paper pastedowns and marbled foredge. The bindings are tight and firm, although the rear outer hinge of Volume III is starting at the bottom. There is some wear to the extremities including fading to the spine of Volume IX as seen (could be restained to match better), some rubbing to the edges of the boards and a few faint marks to some of the boards. There is some evidence of past damp staining to bottom of the rear board of Volume II and the top of the rear board of Volume III. Internally the pages are generally clean and bright with the occasional spot and light spotting to the endpapers. There is a bookplate to the front pastedown of each volume. Very Good. book. Extensively revised by Dyce for this edition; in his preface, he virtually disavows the first edition of 1857 in which he retained readings of a "much more doubtful character," influenced as he writes, "perhaps unconsciously, by the example of Malone and of some later editors" Stated Third Edition. 10 volumes including the Commentaries. Full maroon leather with gilt titles. Gilt decoration to the spine and board edges. Some rubbing to the raised bands and bumping, wear to the volume corners. Nice set. Bookplate for Cristobal de Murrieta to the front paste down of each volume. Cristóbal de Murrieta y Mello. ((Vizcaya), (1790 - London (United Kingdom), c. 1869) was a merchant and banker. Born into a family with few economic resources, he emigrated to colonial Peru accompanied by his brother Francisco Luciano, six years older than him. Once in America, both brothers entered commercial activity, first to the service of other merchants and then forming their own mercantile house. The marriage of Francisco Luciano with the criolla María Ana Ortiz and García Lemoine, whose family was linked to the mining business, strengthened the economic position of the Murrieta brothers. Cristóbal, for his part, married María del Carmen del Campo and Urrutia, whose family had made a fortune in Chile. From this marriage five children were born: José, Cristóbal, Mariano, Adriano and Carmen, all born in London except for the eldest son, who would be the 1st Marques de Santurce. During their stay in Peru, brothers Francisco and Cristóbal Murrieta y Mello opened their own mercantile house in Arequipa, and expanded their overseas activity, sometimes forming a company with other merchants. However, when the independence of Peru was declared, the position of Cristóbal was compromised by the party that had taken during the insurrection in favour of the metropolitan cause, facilitating advances to the Government of Madrid. For this reason, Cristóbal moved to London, where he continued to develop a great economic activity in the commercial and especially financial field. During his first stage in London and until 1842, he managed a house-bank in the company of the also Vizcaya Ventura Aguirre Solarte, with whom he had been linked years ago in Peru. Approximately 8 ¾ inches tall. Condition Report Externally Spine good condition gilt titles and decoration in gilt lined compartments, rubbing to the raised bands and spine ends.
