    Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. First Edition. Complete Two-Volume Set in matching full brown leather bindings. Decorative blind stamping on both covers. Hubbed spines each bear six raised bands and a handwritten title and volume in contemporary ink. Foredges sprinkled red. Volume I contains a frontispiece portrait engraving of author Johannes Scott. On a shelf, this set spans 3.75 inches and weighs almost 10 lbs. VOLUME I: In three parts with corresponding chapters. Includes a preface, and a list of names of the subscribers. 704 pp. VOLUME II: Contains eleven sermons and twenty-six discourses, with a final sermon titled, "A Sermon Preached at the Funeral of the Reverend John Scott. Indexed. Also contains "An Alphabetical Table of the Principal Matters contain'd in both Volumes of this Work" at the back. 585 pp. CONDITION: Covers have some rubbing, several open tears, and occasional stain, but still in beautiful condition. Except inside the back cover of Volume I, paste-down endpapers are each detached from the board, yet present and well attached to textblock. Volume I the front endpapers are detaching from textblock about two-thirds up from the foot, yet still present. Unmarked except for previous owner's name in contemporary dipped ink at the top corner of both Volume's front flyleaf, and the handwritten lettering on each spine. Textblocks are lovely with only mild foxing and minor dampstain throughout, yet text remains uncompromised. Pages are largely clean, and the exteriors are a rich leather. Inner hinges are starting, but boards remain well affixed and the bindings are sound. A solid, handsome set. Full refund if not satisfied. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: "John Scott (1639?1695) was an English clergyman, known as a devotional writer, and a defender of Anglican orthodoxy in his preaching. He became successively minister of St. Thomas's, Southwark, perpetual curate of Trinity in the Minories (before November 1678), rector of St. Peter-le-Poor, 1 Feb. 1678 (resigned before August 1691), and rector of St. Giles-in-the-Fields, being presented to the last benefice by the king, 7 Aug. 1691.
