About this Item: Hardcover. Condition: Good. John Murray, London, 1816; four volumes, small 8vo, 103 x 160mm; pp xiv, [i], 218, [x], 202, [iii], [ii], viii, 9-222, viii, 207, [208], [34]; full straight-grained tan calf gilt, marbled end papers; hinges, ends and corners variously a little rubbed in places and spines a little dulled, binding firm; blank front fly torn out in volume II but otherwise without loss; approximately contemporary elegant ownership signature of Caroline Southall in volume I, a presumably earlier ownership signature of "Miss Bradby" being scribbled out although persisting elsewhere as "Jane Bradby". . . . This is an early, possibly first collected set, of Byron's works at that time and issued by John Murray, Byron's ordinary publisher. No illustrations are called for or present in this set although very similar sets including the slightly larger five volume set of 1817 do have illustrations. Byron's works collected here include "Childe Harold" (1812, Cantos I and II), "The Giaour" (1813), "The Bride of Abydos" (1813), "The Corsair" (1814), "Lara" (1814), "Ode to Napoleon Buonaparte" (stanzas I-XVI, 1814), Poems (37 poems), Hebrew Melodies (1815), generally with extensive notes. . . . Bound in at the end of volume IV is an imperfect copy of a separate work, "Poems by Lord Byron", also published John Murray, 1816, printed by Bulmer & Co; this was a little larger than its host (around 118 x 204mm) and in consequence most of the page numbers at the head have been cut through or trimmed as have occasional lines at the foot; further, an opening leaf (half-title) and two other leaves out of the required total of 40pp are missing leading to a loss of two poems ("Bright be the pace of thy soul" and "When we two parted" and the opening of the first of the two "Stanzas for Music" included (these can be supplied in modern facsimile, not bound in, on request); this is the first edition of the work, most of the poems having appeared earlier that year, and is the second issue thereby containing the first publication of the poem "To Samuel Rogers, Esq." . . . 1816 was a year of great drama in Byron's life. In January his wife of a year, Annabella, left him, taking with her their daughter Ada [later Lovelace] born the previous month, and duly agreeing a legal settlement. In April he left Britain for good, travelling with his personal physician John William Polidori and in June meeting Percy Bysshe Shelley and Shelley's future wife Mary Godwin, a meeting that led to the famous event of Polidori's produing his "The Vampyre" and Mary Shelley what would become "Frankenstein, or The Modern Prometheus".
