Ornate floral gilt decor to spines. One red gilt and one green gilt label per spine, slightly rubbed. Double blue fillets (rubbed) framing boards. Gilt armorial device (unidentified) to front and rear boards. A little soiling to vellum; some board corners slightly pushed in. 8vos (15 x 22.4cm). All edges red. Hinges sound. Bookplates to inside front boards of each vol: armorial bookplate of 'Henricus Mather', with motto 'non obis nascimur' ('born not for ourselves'), bookplate discreetly initialled 'E. S.', and recent bookplate of legal scholar P. R. Glazebrook. Library stamps of Charlton Park School, Cheltenham, to front and rear endpapers of all vols. Marbled endpapers. The first English translation of the Catena Aurea, translated (in large part) by John Henry Newman from the Venetian edition of 1775, as part of his work on The Library of the Fathers with E. B. Pusey (the Catena was not included in the Library, an introductory note explains, 'from the date of some few of the authors introduced into it'). '(I)t is impossible to read the Catena of S. Thomas', says the preface to vol. I, 'without being struck with the masterly and architectonic skill with which it is put together' (the preface is signed J. H. N., but its concluding paragraph ascribes both the translation of St Matthew and 'the above introductory remarks' to Rev. Mark Pattison, Fellow of Lincoln College). This translation was published between 1841 and 1845, spanning the years between Newman's publication of Tract 90 and his reception into the Catholic Church.
