About this Item: Harper & Brothers, New York, 1848. Wraps. First American Edition. Two octavo (5-1/4" x 7-11/16") volumes in the original printed wrappers. First published in England in December 1847, this American edition was published in April 1848 simultaneously in wrappers (two volumes at 25 cents each) and in cloth (one volume at 75 cents), with copies in cloth much more common than those in wrappers. It was this American edition which led to the "unmasking" of the Brontes. The author is wrongly identified on the covers and the title page as being that of "JANE EYRE," which was also first published in 1847 but was of course by Emily's sister, Charlotte. Harper & Brothers, acting on the assumption of Thomas Newby, the Bronte's British publisher, that the sisters (writing under the pseudonyms of Currer, Ellis, and Acton Bell) were, in fact, one person, saw nothing untoward in attributing WUTHERING HEIGHTS to the "author of JANE EYRE." It was to clear up this misunderstanding that the Brontes made their dramatic 1848 visit to their British publishers to reveal their true identity. The various film adaptations of the novel include the classic 1939 version directed by William Wyler and starring Laurence Olivier as Heathcliff and Merle Oberon as Cathy. It was voted best film of the year by the New York Film Critics in preference to the Oscar-garlanded GONE WITH THE WIND. The English Edition of the previous year will set you back an easy 6 figures. Spine and rear cover of the first part in expert facsimile. The second part with expert repairs to the spine and rear cover. Some soiling and foxing to covers and contents. Generally Very Good and exceptionally scarce in the wrappers. Seller Inventory # 016971

About this Item: New York: Harper & Brothers, Publishers, 1848, 1848. Octavo (185 x 125 mm). Recently rebound in black half calf, preserving contemporary marbled paper boards, red morocco spine label. Contemporary ownership inscription to two blanks. Minor worming to top corner of front free endpaper, some loss to top edges of five leaves not affecting text, else a very good copy. First US edition, the second overall. The first edition, published by Thomas Cautley Newby in London, was rushed into the shops on 4 December 1847 to capitalise on the unexpected success of Jane Eyre, which was published by Newby's rivals, Smith, Elder & Company, earlier the same year. Wuthering Heights, however, attracted only hostile and uncomprehending reviews. Despite this, Harper & Brothers, who had a number of recent successes selling the works of British authors in America, including the first US edition of Jane Eyre, remained keen to publish. The first US edition of Wuthering Heights, of which the present copy is an example, appeared on 21 April 1848 in both a wrapper and cloth issue. The misattribution on the title page, "By the author of 'Jane Eyre'", was the result of a deliberate confusion about the Brontė sisters's noms de plume; Newby, who was aware of the difference of author, had tried to sell Anne's The Tenant of Wildfell Hall to Harper's as being the work of Charlotte. Anne and Charlotte heard about this through George Smith, of Smith, Elder (who were offering Charlotte's Shirley to Harpers at the same time) and visited him in London to confess that the Bells were three sisters, hoping to remove further confusion in both the UK and the US. In the meantime, Harper & Brothers struck up a deal with Smith, Elder & Company to receive advance sheets of further "Bell" publications and thus became the principal American publishers of the Brontė novels in the 19th century, subsequently publishing the first US editions of Charlotte Brontė's Shirley, Villette, and The Professor. About this Item: Limited Editions Club, 1994. Hardcover. Condition: As New. 1st Edition. What could they have had in common-Count Balthazar Klossowski de Rola, the Paris-born modern artist (better known as Balthus) who has filled scores of canvases with paintings of female nudes, and Mistress Emily Brontė, the mid-nineteenth century British spinster who seems never to have left the Yorkshire moors? Precisely, those moors. In his youth, the Count visited that wild landscape and, in 1933, made a series of drawings based on her gripping novel. Some say that he saw himself as Heathcliff. Sixty-one years later, and after creating a vast array of famous paintings, many reminiscent of those drawings, Balthus agreed in 1994 to have The Limited Editions Club present, for the first time in their destined context, the entire suite of fifteen drawings. Happy to behold their fruition, Balthus wrote an Afterword for the book. Fifteen lithographs and Afterword by Balthus. Edition limited to 300 numbered copies. Each signed by Balthus. The Balthus drawings have been turned into lithographic plates and printed, in brown-toned black ink, on fine Japanese paper by Bruce Porter at his Trestle Editions in New York City. They were mounted on mould made paper from the Arches mill, in Epinal, France. The text was also printed on this paper, uniquely watermarked with the coat of arms of the family Klossowski de Rola. The book is bound in Nigerian goatskin dyed gray-green to suggest the Yorkshire moors. Linen covered and lined case. One Volume, 12-3/4 x 16-1/2 inches. Print portfolios are also available. As the publisher, we unconditionally guarantee that all books are authentic and the condition is As New (NOS). Signed by Illustrator(s). Seller Inventory # ABE-1554567472318

About this Item: The Limited Editions Club, New York, 1993. Leather. Condition: Fine. Balthus (illustrator). Limited Edition. No. 177 of 300, folio size, 208 pp., signed by Balthus, with LEC Monthly Letter. "What could they have in common --Count Balthazar Klossowski de Rola and Mistress Emily Bronte--the Paris-born modern artist who has filled scores of canvases with paintings of pubescent female nudes, and the mid-nineteenth-century British spinster who seems never to have left the Yorkshire moors. But that was precisely the incredible connection. For in his youth the Count--better known as Balthus--had visited and been enchanted by those Yorkshire moors. And haunted by that wild landscape, at the age of 25 he made a series of drawings based on Emily Bronte's gripping novel. The drawings, whose incisive linear quality has been described by Jean Leymarie, Balthus' biographer and critic, as 'lit up with something of the book's flame and storm-flashes, have a place apart in his work and have provided the inspiration for several of his paintings'. . . Published in 1847, "Wuthering Heights" was the only novel written by Emily Bronte, who lived from 1818 to 1848. The adjective "wuthering", in Yorkshire dialect, refers to the turbulent weather, and of course to the turbulent atmosphere that permeates the book" (n. b., from LEC Newsletter). There could be no better way to read "Wuthering Heights" than this: the type, binding, and illustrations are all chosen with loving care, coming together in simple, balanced harmony. ___DESCRIPTION: Original binding by John von Isakovics at Jovonis Studio, full grey-green goatskin with title stamped in dark-brown on the front board, fifteen full-page inlaid lithographs on Japanese paper throughout; Monotype Dante type, specially made off-white mould-made Arches paper, folio size (12.75" by 16.5"), pagination: [i-viii] 1-208 [209-210] [1 colophon], one of 300 copies, this number 177, signed by Balthus on the colophon. With the Limited Editions Club Monthly Newsletter laid in. Housed in a clamshell box covered in beige cloth, lined in velvet and with tan leather spine label with brown lettering. ___CONDITION: This copy is fine, like new, with clean boards, straight corners without rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings. The LEC Monthly Letter is fine, clean, without wear. The clamshell box is also fine, strong and sturdy, clean, without wear. ___POSTAGE: Please note that this is a large and heavy book, and therefore additional postage may apply; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind book we sell. About this Item: Harper and Brothers, Publishers, New York, NY, 1848. Hardcover. Condition: Good. First American Edition, First Printing. The first US edition, still nicely attired in the publisher's original blind stamped cloth with the misattribution of 'By the author of "Jane Eyre." ' printed on the title page and stamped in gilt onto the spine. Reddish brown decorative cloth over boards, title and floral motif stamped in gilt onto spine, 12mo (7-3/8 inches tall), pp. (3)-288, collated, with both the front and rear binder's blanks and rfep sewn in as called for, but lacking a first ffep. Volume is worn with fading and minor soil, corners rubbed through, spine ends are bumped and pulled with tears to cloth esp. at heel which also has a horizontal tear and a small puncture near head, modest browning and damp stains within - one being thumb-sized and affecting part of the upper fore-edge right through text block, text block still tightly bound and somewhat "stiff" from damp stains, partial price tag to front pastedown, a single leaf [p. 83/84] with a shallow 1/4" x 2" chip from the bottom edge likely being a paper production flaw. An unsophisticated, solid copy of a very desirable Bronte novel. "Wuthering Heights was published simultaneously in cloth (75¢) and in paper covers (2 parts 25¢ each) on April 21, 1848. Both bindings contain the original printed sheets, and copies in either binding constitute the first American edition." Ref. Smith [collated] p. 75. Seller Inventory # 3040

About this Item: Smith Elder, UK, 1851. Decorative Cloth. Condition: Good++. No Jacket. Second Edition. 2nd Edition 1851. It was published three years after the first edition in December 1850 by Smith, Elder and Company. The text has been updated and a new preface added by her sister Charlotte Bronte. Also included for the first time is the poems of the Bronte sisters. 'This new edition of 'Wuthering Heights and Agnes Grey' is a book of very considerable literary importance. Not only does it contain (pp. vii-xvi) Charlotte's 'Biographical Notice' of her two sisters, together with (pp. xvii-xxiv) a Preface to 'Wuthering Heights'; it also includes a series of poems by both Emily and Anne which appeared in its pages for the first time' (Wise, p.104). The second edition has two states namely with the date 1850 and the date 1851 to the title page. Very few copies exist with the date 1850 and most appear with the date 1851. This book is dated 1851 and has the claret cloth boards to the spine and front board. The rear board has been added at a later date by re-casing the spine and two boards together. I suspect the rear board came away many years ago and was lost from the book and it was repaired using a similar coloured board from another book. Not ideal but finding the second edition in most of the original cloth is a rare find. The book is good++ with quite bright boards. Hinges and spine tips quite rubbed. Small loss to spine tips. Structurally the book works well. New endpapers with large bookplate to the front. Inscription to the inner page and inner title page page Contents quite good with light foxing and age toning to the pages. First few pages of the biographical notice by Charlotte Bronte are missing. More images can be taken upon request. Ref 10016 Size: 16mo - over 5¾" - 6¾" tall. Seller Inventory # 013838

About this Item: [New York:] [1943], 1943. Together 9 woodcut proofs on japon: 6 of which measure 305 x 230 mm; 3 of which measure 154 x 228 mm. In fine condition. A selection of nine woodcut proofs, from the library of the artist, each signed by the artist in pencil, done for Eichenberg's edition of Wuthering Heights (New York, 1943). These proofs were printed in a limited, unnumbered, run of 10 or fewer by Eichenberg in 1943. In 1980 at the Hampshire Typothetae Harold McGrath issued a signed limited reprint of 20 copies. McGrath's reprint, titled Artist of the Book, collected together a total of 248 of Eichenberg's illustrations and was made available institutionally and to a few major print collectors only. The total number of proofs pulled from the 14 original woodblocks made for the Eichenberg's Wuthering Heights edition is therefore roughly 30, the earlier examples, such as these, distinguished by being unnumbered. Proofs from the first printing are scarce, with one other selection, containing just four proofs, traced at auction. The original blocks are now part of the Eichenberg Archive at Yale University's Sterling Library. Eichenberg (1901-1990) moved to the US in 1933 and quickly became acknowledged as one of the leading wood engravers of his generation, illustrating such authors as Dostoyevsky, Tolstoy, Poe, and Grimmelshausen.
